Guitar Wars - Week 3: Cast Your Votes!!!

      Ok. It's that time again!!!

This week's contest was an exercise in original composition. Each contestant was to compose an original, 30-second piece on their guitar and upload it. Again, it didn't matter the genre, and multi-tracking is allowed (though we didn't really acknowledge it at first. Hehe.)

Now come on and support all our hard work by casting those votes!!!!
(Again: contestants please vote for yourselves to eliminate any chance of error)

      Oneiro's entry:

PJ! You get my vote again. I liked the blues feel, that was very good!

Joe and Oneiro were both great! Ramna, just not my style at all. O, it wasn't too bad, I just don't care for it.

Ok - I see no rule for having to vote for myself, so before somebody edits one in I'm voting TJ again. Reason - everything. I LOVE his tone, his feel... it's just a sweet piece and an easy listen.

Thank you!!!!! It was a lot of fun to do, and very challenging getting it 30 seconds. The piece wanted to be just a little bit longer. If I ever do a serious recording of it, it will have a bit more breathing room.

      **EDIT**
(Argh - I now see that O DID have that rule in there. I honestly didn't see it. Ah well - consider it a penalty for being a bit dense. And I'm not being gratuitous here - given the choices and my tastes, I really do like TJ's best again.)

I would probably have a hard time condensing something to 30 seconds, but you did a pretty good job. I always tend to play lengthen pieces and add more instead of shorten them, so I'd end up getting frustrated at myself.

Wow. I'm finding it near impossible to choose one here. They're all freaking amazing. I really like what Oneiro did with his layering, pj's was just awesome, I loved the notes, and O's was absurdly cool (though there was one moment where the layered notes were a bit off-time or something, not sure about that, something just didn't sound right for a couple seconds; not trying to dig on you O, it was great!) TJ's was superb again, loved the slightly country feel to it (to me at least) and Ranma's riff was super hardcore.

I'm going to vote for Ranma, because that riff was freakishly cool. If I could vote for the rest of y'all too though, I would.

No problem, man. I'm still a complete n00b, when it comes to composition, so I appreciate all the feedback I can get. Thanks.

Wow you guys. Can I just say once again how much I am LOVING these competitions??

Okay so when Ranma's started playing, I was like, "Meh okay. This isn't my style," but after the first 10 seconds it started to get awesome! I was very pleasantly surprised. Ranma, you're making me like that style of music!

TJ's was sooooo pleasant to the ears, just like the last one. I lurved it!!!

O, I thought the background was really good but turned a bit awkward once the guitar bit was layered on it halfway through (if you know what I'm talking about). Nonetheless, it just evoked some sort of really nice emotions from me... probably because the background music reminds me of some sort of love song or something that I would dance to... hehe I don't really know what is going on, but I just absolutely loved it. I think with a little bit of tweaking, that piece could be turned into a single or something.

      O gets mah vote!

(And PJ, hehe you're really cute what with voting for someone else. )

Edit: Oh and for the first time, I had to listen to each one several times (and with pleasure) before deciding. It was tough!

      Thank you, Messzszszsz!!

Yeah, I definitely know what you're talking about. So you know, though, the background is me playing the guitar with an effect on it, as well. But yeah, I really didn't know what else to do with it, aside from the background bit, so I decided to add another track on it (the improvised bit that comes in halfway). I felt kind of iffy about it, but I'm really glad you like it!

My loopstation has the ability to reverse a loop. I'm going to have to play with that some now.

How about a task that requires the entire thing to be listened to backwards?

I got to see him solo once, a while back, in a little bar - just him, a stack of amps and a few Strats and acoustics mounted on stands that he walked around to at different times.

It was a tour-de-force in sound, plus he did several King Crimson pieces where he was playing BOTH his and Fripp's parts simultaneously, and sometimes singing too. He took requests, answered questions and just seemed to be having a great time.

And then he walked out into the crowd and bummed around with us for an hour or so afterward. Very classy guy... very friendly and real guy too.

Now you're making me jealous pj..

One of the greatest gigs I ever saw (on video) was him with Crimson.. Fripp, Levin et al.. great, great guitarist.

And I think I may have written this before, but the album "Big Electric Cat" is still one of my all-time fave albums.. when I hear the track "Naive Guitar", I just.. well.. words fail me.

Wow! No obvious choices this week. I loved Oneiro's, very Steve Vai-ish. Ranma, I'm a huge shred head and really dug yours. O's was good, but the second guitar track sounded off key to me. It's really come down to TJ and PJ for me. I'll give the edge to PJ for the more technical stuff.

I never got to see Crimson with Levin, though I've seen Levin many times over the years, with Gabriel and even once with Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe while Chris Squire was off with Trevor Rabin trying to re-invent Yes.

I DID see Crimson with Trey Gunn on Chapman Stick, along with Belew and Fripp. I forget which drummer, but it wasn't Bill.

      NOW are you jealous? *grin*

That's one of the great things about Detroit - we have a lot of venues and many opportunities to see great acts.

Oh - King Crimson "Discipline" is one of my favorite albums of any genre and any age, period. That was the Fripp/Belew/Levin/Bruford lineup, of course. The followup album, Beat, wasn't too shabby either.

Well thank you! This week's did produce some interesting stuff, didn't it? It was a lot of fun (and quite challenging) doing that bit and keeping it within time.
