sounds great O. Now does it have to be a solo? or a classic rock riff or two? as long as it's classic rock?

See this is where I would rather not be the planner - Either way, I'm going to have to learn something new for the contest, so I really don't care. Lol.

But, just to go for the more challenging, let's make it a solo.

      Folk is great!!!!

Hey - having to stretch outside of your comfort zone is always a learning experience.

L.S. had sketched out the idea of doing a blues. The way I understood it, we had to play both chords and the solo, no tracking, and over one minute. I thought that sounded like a nice, challenging bit.

If we go with a "favorite solo," I'm going to bow out for a week. No big deal there - just letting you know. That's a task I'll sure enjoy listening to! It's just that I haven't transcribed a solo literally in decades and it has been than long since I've been focused on cover tunes.

So.. let me get this right..

It has to be a "rock" solo?

It has to be just one track.. no double-tracking? No backing track(s)?

This is gonna be funny.. one I have in mind is only 15-20 seconds long.. but what the hell.. anything to cement my position at the bottom of the charts!

      Whaaaaat?!
Aww, come on, pj. Hell, I jumped into the composition contest without knowing a single thing about composition, and even the solo I've picked for this week is completely out of my league! I thought part of the whole idea of this was to branch out of our comfort zones and try new stuff. Why wouldn't you want to participate?

We'll do the blues contest next week, and then after that we'll have to find some way to choose our events...maybe someone that isn't actually competing can choose for us.

And yeah, Oneiro. All of that sounds right, except that you can use a backing track. No layers, though.

Time, my friend. Just time. I am very limited and very backlogged this week, so it would be a good time for a break. I would love to transcribe and record a favorite solo, but just can't see it happening (responsibly) for the next two weeks. No big deal - I really am looking forward to listening to what you all do! (The way things are going right now, between my backlog, dealing with my parents, legal wrangling and having just taken on another rush job, I'd probably have to bow out of anything you choose this week - so I'd really rather see you do the solo thing right now!)

I think just coming up with a pool of ideas and whoever is in charge now (you?) picking one each week with a bit of discussion is fine. Or we could rotate - have whoever loses the worst each week pick the next competition!

And yeah, Oneiro. All of that sounds right, except that you can use a backing track. No layers, though.
Er... how do you use a backing track without layers? A track is a track... and tracks are layered, aren't they? Or are you saying that the solo itself must be a single track - yeah. That makes more sense.

Right then... here are some ideas:

      - Play something on a single string only.

      - Throw out a few unrelated chords and see what people can come up with using them - anything from a solo thing to a full arrangement.

      - Pick a totally lame cover song and see who can come up with the most interesting take on it. (Like Oh Susannah or something.)

      - Shred.

      - Free Style; do anything you want, with the goal of impressing the voting public and your fellow guitarists.

      - Themed compositions... (like lima beans or whatever.)

Just a few to get the pool started.

      Let me try translating:

You may play to a backing track of some kind, but you may not use multiple tracks for the solo you play over it.

      Like this:
      Track 1: Beat loop
      Track 2: Bass guitar
      Track 3-248: orchestral accompaniment
      Track 249: Lead Guitar (OK)
Track 250: Lead Guitar Overdubs and Flourishes (NOT OK!!!!!)

Track 251: Ambient lighting control (MIDI)
      Track 252: Cannon

I'm totally confused - this IS your show, but I had the idea that you had handed things off to others.

So, boss - what ARE we doing this week? You tell us!

I really am disappointed that I have not received any votes. It does have kinda a beginning and an end in a Hendrix type sorta manner.
      lol

I can't judge this. One you are all friends, although I do know you are big boys. But two, everyone has such a unique style it is not easy to compare.
      Anyone else finding this difficult?
It is a little hard to not be biased towards a genre you like. Moreover if you are not well educated in what other styles bring.
Any advice I could use, maybe others?
