      Learning Japanese

I'm planning to head over to Japan for a number of months in 2009, and I really want to learn as much of the language as I can before I go. I did study Japanese at school for two years, so I have a lot of the basics down and the background knowledge. I have been trying to teach myself through videos, books and tutorials which has generally been going quite well. But if anyone knew of good websites or anything else to teach Japanese that would be appreciated. Or, if anyone here can speak it and would be willing to teach me that'd be great. Thanks.

That's a really great idea, sadly, people are probably going to leave this thread to rot, because they're harsh like that. Anyway, that's a great idea, think it'll work out great. Being in Japan will most definately give you some experience with it.

I recommend you get a tutor. That's the only way you'll get feedback on whether you're saying things right. Don't be like every american I know who tries to show off their French

Ahh thanks for reminding me about the PM!!

About JET, I hear they don't want you to know too much Japanese. It's a teaching thing, so they dont want you to use Japanese with the students.

Man, what is with all the otaku on this site?

Anyways, the best language learning thing
in my opinion is Pimsleur .
I downloaded Pimsleur and Rosetta Stone to learn Russian, and they work great.
Pimsleur is better for verbal and accent, and Rosetta Stone is better for reading and writing.
A combination of the two will have you speaking Japanese really soon.
