Tell Me About How Much You Love Your Pet

Yeah, we used to live in a busy neighbourhood and couldn't let Malinki out... she'd lived in a flat before we got her and so our house was a big improvement, but she still wanted to get out, and made several escape attempts :P. Now we're back in the UK in a less busy place and she can go out when she wants.

This has the effect that we find dead mice and sparrows occasionally lying on the carpet, or else find that Malinki has brought one into the house and is now chasing it around under bookshelves and such. Not something you want to wake up to in the night :angry:

Hehe, that was a factor when we chose it :D. Also, her previous owner had called her 'Pinky' which sounds similar to Malinki so we thought she might know to answer to the name.

Also she's a very small cat :).

Spartiate, I agree that letting your cat outdoors is a positive influence, if not on health then definitely on spirit. My cat just loves to be outdoors... and the cute thing is, he tries to make us go outside with him instead of going off and doing his kitty thing.

My cats won't step foot outside. I can leave the doors wide open to carry in groceries or whatever, and they'll just stand there on the threshold, sniffing the air, but they won't go out. I guess they know how good they have it in the house! :D


Beautiful dog, Lamneth! :D The agility and tracking would be cool. These working breeds are happiest when they have a job to do.

I suppose you never let them out when they were young? Maybe if they never knew about the outside world, it wouldn't seem as attractive... Anyways, it's still interesting that they don't seem to have any "animal instincts". What would happen if there was a mouse walking about in front of your cats, or a dog for that matter? Also, do you know why cats eat grass? When I put my cat out, he looks like a freaking cow grazing in the field :P.

And Mes, odd that your cat is so approachable outside. Mine tends to get paranoid and I have to make sure not to make any sudden moves if I don't want him to bolt off.

Actually, yes, I did take them outside on a harness and leash when they were young. Both of them were terrified and always wanted back in the house. Now I think they're too traumatized to venture out again lol. I believe cats live longer, safer, healthier lives by staying indoors, so I'm glad mine don't try to sneak out. :)

We are screening in our deck so the cats will be allowed out there once it's done. They will love sitting out there to watch the birds, but will remain safely enclosed.

Cats are primarily carnivores, but plenty of cats enjoy eating grass. I'm not sure why - especially since a lot of cats vomit the grass back up after eating it. I've got some indoor cat grass and my cats love it.

I love my cat! :D (He's still pretty much a kitten) He lives indoor too, I also take him out on a harness. He didn't even take notice of it when I first put it on him. He likes going outside but I'm afraid he'll get hurt if he ventures out of the garden. Oh and I'm pretty sure that grass helps cat's digestive system, I even read it in a book.

I guess I better post my post my cat now. :)

Well this isnt my dog, its my neighbors, but its soo cute! And it always comes by to play...Its the most gentle dog Ive ever met.

A friend of mine has a Russian Blue and walks him on a leash...but he has to really watch she he doesn't squeaze out of the harness (he is good!). He isn't scared of dogs and enjoys the walks but is a bit stubborn on what direction you want him to go in LOL.

I want to start scootering with my dog soon since its getting cooler now. Anyone here do anything like that? I'm going to do that along with occasional roadwork to keep him fit. I hope running in harness doesn't make marks in his coat. That won't stop me from doing it tho.

The breeder wants me to do schutzhund or ringsport with him. I don't like the way he raises them. I would consider it if I had raised him from a baby pup but I got him at 13 months. He encourages them to bite and chew on people from babies. I totally disagree with it. I think they should be taught to not bite but tug on toys and gradually introduced to the sleeve in early games. I think they should be taken places and socialized and taught manners and control before protection...not only taken places to do schutzhund. The whole point of schutzhund is to teach control and have a safer more reliable protector not one that thinks its ok to bite everyone in sight.

He was never worked much on the sleeve and never had any defense (too young anyhow) so this way I have been able to start from scratch and teach him how to behave. But I think if I started schutzhund with him he would regress back...yeah I probably could keep him in line but it would be a constant problem and liability. Blah blah, I am rambling LOL

Lovely dog as well Xox, it's the best when a neighbour has them, then you can enjoy the dog without having to feed it and comb it (which would be a helluva big job on that one :P) and take care of it.

My various neighbours have 5 dogs between them, one small black one a big like Meggy's (Gypsy), one short haired labrador (Tilly), one golden retriever (Shana), one black labrador/dalmation crossbreed (Lily) and one tiny new little fluffy golden retriever pup... can't remember the name they've only just got it but it's soo cute - definitely smaller than my cat (which is in turn very small :P).

Oh and about cats again, my cat was born and raised until she was two in a flat, but when she moved to us she still wanted to get out. Maybe it's just something in the nature of the cats.

I think he was 11 weeks old when I got him. He was one of 8 kittens. They were all sooo cute, I wanted to take them all when I went to fetch him. :)

I totally agree. We worked very hard to socialize our Dobe pup to make sure he listens and knows how to behave in different situations and around people and other animals. We got him for a family companion, not an attack dog.

Actually I have seen it in him, I was walking one night and some punks came walking towards me. I don't know that they were going to seriously do anything but he didn't give them a chance. They were looking at me one started walking forward and I don't know if they actually saw the dog at that point or not. Anyhow he came over and stood in front of me sideways and stared at them with the mean wolf look. They spread out and he raised his head and put his ears back (but not totally flat) he raised his tail with the end slightly down. He barked the most nasty snarly bark I have ever heard and the first guy said "Oh shit, my bad yo" and they walked WAY around us. He watched them until they were out of sight. I praised him good saying "Watch em'" I am thinking about working on the "watch" command without him taking a bite just barking. That would be good to have him bark on cue.

Yep, it's what they were bred to do. They are naturally protective and watchful of their families. My dog hasn't really started with these tendencies yet, but he is only 6 months old. Your experience is a classic example of the dog sensing his owner was in harm's way, and his instinct for protection kicked in. Any smart would-be assiliant would back off!

Today, I dont like my dog. He's pissing me off. He wont stop standing under my feet wherever I go. I've yelled at him a lot today. :embarrassed:

So know that feeling. Malinki is a very loud cat. She likes to miaw miow miaow a lot, even when she's been fed and has water and everything. It's impossible to know what she wants. You have to just go into a room and shut the door.
I can't see how you could ever get angry with your dog though Meggy... he's so innocent-looking :P

I love my cat called Soldier because he has real character. He is a rescued grey tabby. He has no teeth on one side and only likes to be stroked on his head. It took us weeks before we could cuddle him, he was very wary of strangers. Although he sometimes lashes out at me, these times are getting less as he realises we are not going to hurt him. I can kiss his furry head now and pick him up. When we first got him he flinched away from us if we put out our hand to him.

I worry about what happened to him before. If he sees my partner with boots on he runs away.:embarrassed:
