What merits a ban? I just figured I'd outright ask, so I don't have to worry about it. I noticed a lot of talk of members being banned. I haven't actually noticed the losses, but I don't want to join those who've been banned.

Usually its disrupting the community. Such as abusiveness, hacking, or generally being bad for DV. But they give you 5 warnings and such... so you have to ignore them all to get banned.
But then again I'm not staff, there's probably other things too.
I find it hilarious that people think they are just going to be minding their own business one day and then BAM! they're banned!
Members are warned numerous times for abusiveness toward other members, and causing a disruption on the board, among other things (obviously every single reason cannot be listed entirely). If, and only if, the warned member chooses not to change their ways after warnings, usually they will earn a temp ban.
If at any time, that member tries to circumvent the temp ban by creating duplicate accounts or repeatedly posting in the feedback forum about how they demand to be unbanned immediately, the temp ban will be made into a permaban.
A lot of discussion and effort by the staff is put into each and every banning. It's not a frivolous thing. It's not like we are sitting back pulling names out of a hat and banning them  come on, people. Members are banned because they DESERVED IT by being warned multiple times and not stopping what they are doing.
