Dessert Contest

My boyfriend's job is having a picnic with a dessert competition at the end, and the first prize is a free airplane ticket to anywhere the company flies to. So I'm entering a fall inspired chocolate torte.

A chocolate torte is basically a chocolate cake that uses very little flour, so it comes out really dense and rich...almost like fudge. Then I'll cover it with chocolate ganache (which is like a hot fudge topping, only it's not hot, and makes the cake all pretty and shiny and adds more chocolatey goodness to it). Then I'm going to decorate the top with edible chocolate leaves that I've painted in fall colors, marzipan pumpkins and flowers in the continuing fall theme, and to top it off, a spun sugar lattice dome.

I'll take pics as I go. Here's what I got so far:

Well PISS poo, I'm trying to make a dome out of the spun sugar, but it keeps sticking to the bowl and breaking (EVEN though I used oil for a non stick surface), so I'm trying it one last time and letting it cool 150% before trying to remove it.

So one time it broke, I got mad and just wadded up the whole thing and it came out looking kinda like hay, so I formed it into a little haystack:

I may use it and make a little autumn scene with haystacks, leaves and pumpkins if the dome continues to be a complete failure.

Incidentally, the cake part came out fine, and it's cooling so I can make and add the ganache later.

I'm gonna start ALL over with a new batch of melted sugar and see if I can get it to work.

So this is what's going on the little description card:

I had to toss the 'dome'. When I've made them in the past, I served them within a few hours of making it. But overnight, this one got all sticky and kinda collapsed and broke in some places and I didn't think it was gonna hold up for much longer. So I had to chuck it.

But it still looks nice without it, and I changed the card:

Robert just took it to work, and honestly, I'm glad I don't have to worry about ROBERT having to worry if the dome breaks or collapses so he won't have to fuss with it at all when he gets there. The rest of the cake is really strong and holding up well and I'm rationalizing right now because I'm tired and I MISS MY DOME
