Can we beat the most viewers ever online?

I was looking at the bottom of the forums, and I saw that the most viewers online was in 2012.

Well do we want our record to be in that lousy year?

No!

So lets set up a time and date (English people and American people would be one day off, so if it was on Friday for English people, it would be Thursday for Americans, plus a couple hours off, but that is irrelevant as of now), but before all that, lets just collect enough people to do it. (and all you people without accounts count as well!)

Let us make our most users online a day we can remember!

I'd gladly involve myself in this if a time were agreed upon (just express a time with the most common time zone, perhaps US Central or something, so everyone can convert it to their own).

But I have a feeling most people will not be interested, and that this idea will not be carried through. It's kind of... unnatural. I suspect the number isn't supposed to be planned. It's supposed to give everyone an accurate idea of when the site has been most popular.

And that was only a lousy year for you because you weren't a member of DV yet. :P

Essentially, all those lines dividing different sectors of the map are an hour off of each other. So if you look at the prime meridian, two of those sectors to the left would be two hours EARLIER than the time it is on the prime meridian.

I think for this idea to work, you would need to discover the DreamViews bellwether first - the sheep whose lead all other sheep will follow (and the bellwether is probably not an admin given how many anti-authoritarian non-conformists we've got here). Then, you would need to convince the bellwether that this is a good idea.

Read Connie Willis' book "Bellwether" to find out more about how that works - it's an awesome book, in my opinion, about how fads come to be.

This sounded like a great idea. Then I realized I don't care.

You have to remember, though, in 2012, the world was supposed to end, so that sparked an interest in prolonging your life through the night.

Yeah, interestingly enough, its a month before the predicted date of the apocalypse.

Coincidence? I think not!

It would be hard to make a plan to beat it, because if you look, most of the people online are always guests. Like right now there are barely any members on, and over 500 guests.

I'm sure if we allowed porn on the forum, we could easily gain more viewers.

But the US are and Europe are only 6-8 hours off. You're thinking of Japan or Australia.

Depending on the time agreed upon, 6-8 hours could result in different day. For example, if the agreed upon time were 11pm Eastern Standard Time on Thursday, then it would be 6am on Friday in a timezone seven hours away. I think that is what she meant, not that it is a whole day away, just that it may already be the next day.

July 28th, at 10:30(my time AKA PST). If this doesn't work let me know :D Its on a weekend though...

I tried doing all the converting of time but its very mind numbing, plus it would be easier to just look at it yourself.

SO! Its decided 10:30 PST lets do this.

That's an excellent idea, let's arrange an event at a time where a major part of the community is sleeping.

Not long ago I was looking at the users online and we have several hundred people (all guests) viewing a very old thread. I wondered why, so I looked up the thread title on Google.

Turns out Reddit and some drug-using forum both had a link to DreamViews appear on their sites, accounting for all the extra activity.

You want to get the most users to show up then that's what it will take, spamming DV links to other sites. Of course it would have to be a really interesting topic to get that much traffic.


Anyway, it's a nice idea but it's unlikely to be something we can easily influence.


Now if you were offering free beer and food....THEN you might get some traffic. ;)

I am not sure whether free beer would work. Some people might wonder what's wrong with it. But if you offered beer on sale for only $0.99, you might get better traffic. When I was living in California, someone once told me that they had put out a sofa outside their house with sign like "free to a good home", and no one took it. It was not until they attached a suggested price tag to it that someone decided to steal it. :) So sell cheep beer under condition that someone must visit DreamViews to get it at the full discount sale price, that might work.

Well we could all spam DV links everywhere at the chosen time. And do you mean 10:30 am or pm? AM may work, not PM for PST though.

I don't know time zones either but I don't think most people have a conversation to their time zone from every other time zone memorized. That's what the internet is for. It shouldn't matter what time zone it's expressed in, just look it up.

In UTC it would be Sunday July 28 at 17:30 -- assuming that this was 10:30am in PST. If it was 10:30pm on Sunday in California USA, that would be 5:30 am on Monday for UTC (which is universal global time standard. That of course would probably mean that we would only get the really dedicated Europeans plus the insomniacs from Europe. So it is probably better if we say it is 10:30am in California and 17:00 UTC on Sunday. The viewers in Japan will still not be likely to participate unless they are dedicated or insomniacs though, given how that's 2:30am in Tokyo on Monday morning. We also are unlikely to get Australian participants, since for example in Sydney Australia, that's 7:30 am on Monday morning.

We have the UTC standard for exactly this reason. One of NASA's rockets literally exploded, because they used non-global unit measurements. You don't want DreamViews to explode, do you???
