      Martial arts.

Along with lucid dreaming one of my obsessions is learning martial arts. I really like muay thai and tai-chi chu'an. I can't go to a class for muay thai until next year but tai-chi seems intresting for now.
I know that in comparison tai-chi and muay thai are complete opposite but I still really like the ancient chinese philosophy so I hope to become good at both.
Anyone else do any MA's or combat sports? What do you think of them.

I did Aikido for a while but it wasn't really the thing for me. And right now I'm looking to get into another one. Maybe Judo, I haven't really decided yet.

TKD looks really cool when people use it outside of sparring. Did you learn all the fancy flying kicks XD

What did you think of aikido. I think it looks quite cool, the whole using your opponents momentum to get him down without injuring him.

i personally recommend MMA(mixed martial arts) as it shows you a lot of martial arts techniques both standing and ground techniques. the muscles and endurance used in muay thai is different from that of ju-jitsu. MMA is pretty well rounded. Krav Maga is also pretty good to.

the last martial arts i did was muay thai back in march. now i pretty much train myself when i'm at the gym.

I've noticed that alot of mma's state that they exclusively did muay thai and BJJ but if you look at their technique they throw barely any kicks. It seems more like they have learned k1 or something. Off course it all depends on your teacher.
Is it true that it only takes half a year to learn krav maga?

Yeah you're right it's a pretty cool looking martial art but it's also pretty complicate and hard. I didn't have much choice though, the town I live in is pretty small and I couldn't find anything else that would suit me. Maybe someday I'll try again though.

I used to be a tkd player 4 years ago. My coach and team mates always applauded me for being an excellent head kicker during practice; but when it comes to competitions, I sucked. I wonder why .

I've been training for over 14 years now (I'm 19).

I have a black belt in Tung Su Doe and I've trained in Wing Chun and some Jiu Jitsu. My Tung Sue Do instructors are very well versed in other styles as well though (Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, kickboxing and more... so I've been immersed in quite a few different styles).

In college, I'm mainly doing Olympic Style Tae Kwon Doe (Best that is offered on campus at the moment).

I've never competed, I mainly practice as means to learn how to defend myself, to discipline myself and to let out energy. I feel if I competed, I would break too many rules haha. I'm at my best when it's all or nothing and something is on the line...

It is a lot like non-olympic tae kwon doe. But it incorporates more a mix between hands and feet whereas Tae Kwon Doe focuses primarily on footwork. Tung So Doe (or Tang Soo Do depending on how you want to spell it haha) is more like Japanese Karate.

Hey dutch, id just like to tell you i love your tips on luciddreaming(: but anyway on topic. Im 16 and iv done muay thai for about 2 years now, dabbled in boxing and jiu jitsu, i learn to compete, so i guess first off is you wanna know why you wanto learn. Self defence, competition, knowledge ect. But my opinion in martial arts is go with Boxing, Muaythai or kickboxing, jiu jitsu, i find them very practical and fun great to learn, jiu jitsu is great for self defence, say your getting mugged, your mugger is doomed if he doesnt know what he's doing, you will be in your element haha. Muaythai and Boxing really teach you 'how to fight'.

      I love combat sports <3

Thanks Ichimaru, I really just want to learn martial arts for discipline and knowledge. I often think about having to protect myself but I really am the kinda guy that manages to not have any enemies. I really would like to try jiu jitsu or muay thai but I don't think I can do the muay thai as it isn't funded by my unniversity. I honestly don't mind what martial art I learn, every single one is amazing and I suppose my main ambition is just because I can.
Do you do competitions? I never reallyl iked them but I winning is a great feeling.

I've been doing Kendo/kenjutsu/tameshigiri for quite some time now, and I'd have to say that they are all extremely rewarding. If you can find a good teacher, I'd highly recommend them!

My father occasionally wanted to impart more "korea-ness" into me when I was younger. This involved signing up for Taekwondo at age six or seven. I liked it more than many of the extra-curriculars I was signed up for throughout elementary and middle school (too fucking many). Unfortunately the Taekwondo dojo I went to started turning into a McDojo after five or six years. I was sick of being spread between six or seven after school activities so I refused to go to any more. By that time my father wasn't in one of his "azn" moods so it was no big deal.

I'm not even sure if any of the stuff I learned is practical.... it impressed my friends, at least.

Well your ambitions are just fine! Jiu Jitsu would be great, its fun to learn once you get used to the whole thing and very effective for self defence in most scenarios . Remember to ask question to your teachers, like intricate details and effectivness in different situations, also i find the bjj comps pretty chill, like you dont get hurt the majority of the time as its quite safe in low level competition and also ofcourse theres an anticipation of competition present, even being scared is there too, but i guess it trains your mind and keeps you aware, and afterwards is an awesome feeling, I love working hard in training to gain a well earned rest at the end of the night "No rest is worth accept that which is gained". So yes i do compete, I'll pm you some footage(:

MMA is a ridiculous idea. If you don't focus on something how are you going to master it?

Everything works out in the end, sometimes even badly.

@OriginalPoster where did you get the idea that MMA doesn't involve focus? It takes parts from a whole bunch of styles and mashes them together, but it's not like you are trying to learn 20 different styles at once. You have to focus just as much as any other martial artist.

That doesn't make any sense. How is mashing styles together more effective than mastering one style? Combat styles are created randomly, they're perfected over generations of masters.

Everything works out in the end, sometimes even badly.

Also when DV gets fixed I won't have to double post but what I meant to say was that combat styles are NOT created randomly.

Everything works out in the end, sometimes even badly.

Neither is MMA, it mashes together the best bits from each style, and ignores the parts that aren't very good. Combat styles share a lot in common so the pieces it takes are often repeated in many of them, so it's actually not that different from a lot of styles. I'm personally not sure if it's better than any martial art or not, but it isn't random, and it requires focus.

I have not gone to classes for 7 years, as my life has moved on to other things, and my schedule does not fit any classes offered. However, before that I learned a few styles of Jujitsu, plus a couple styles of Aikido, some Kenpo and what ever else I could find. I specialized in Jujitsu.

Here is my take on MMA. It has an obvious Pro and an obvious Con. On the pro side, it is designed to make tough street fighters or cage fighters. The styles incorperate effective real life street fighting moves. It does not train many moves, just a couple dozen effective ways to hurt someone. If your one concern is to learn to fight a bully or to be a bully, then it is the shortest route to effective one on one combat skills.

However, on the con side, all the structure and content of the origanal arts is lost. I will give some examples. In most martial arts, the instructors will not teach bullies, or at least attempt to weed out the aggressive dangerous students. MMA is taught much more like boxing, that is simply a tough and macho, rough and tumble sport. MMA teachers want tough aggressive dangerous sttudents. As even 6 months in MMA will give a huge addvatage to one on one street fighting, you now have a rash of dangerous bullies. Thanks for that MMA. Another example is that in old school styles much of the focus is on personal development and a peaceful mind. that is often gone from MMA. MMA also ends up lacking subtle improvements to a students skills that take years to develop, such as the fluidity and intuition developed in Aikido.

An art like Aikido is not intended to be a complete fighting system. 4 years of strictly Aikido practice vs 6 months of MMA practice, all things equal, the MMA person will brutally dominate the Aikido person, unless the Aikido person can pull off a deadly head cracking move in the first 4 seconds of the class. 9 out of 10 conflicts Aikido can not stand alone. However, if you learn Jujitsu and the aikido elements have been removed due to the years of discipline involved, the jujitsu loose a huge amount. A MMA student with 4 years Aikido and 6 months MMA may very well be deadly against someone with 4.5 years of MMA.

The MMA training is pretty brief, like boxing. You learn the routine and then master the physical health and endurance, to become a fighter. That strength and endurence can be added to anyones life, but will not be matched in traditional arts (Judo excluded).

In conclusion, if you want to do it because you want to be tough and dangerous and only want to spend a few months learning "TO FIGHT" them MMA is the only way to do it. However, if you want a experience that develops you, like you see in martial arts movies, some arts will offer much, much more of that.
Also, in the end the ultimate self defense would be someone well versed in MMA but who has received deeper more subtle training in both Jujitsu and Aikido. Other short falls of just MMA practice include the lack of much multiple oponent skills and limited (but stil OK) standing moves.
Peace Be With You. Oh, and sure, The Force too, why not.
