Oh, well, that makes sense. Still doesn't justify the idea of placing them above everyone else by virtue of bloodline. But it seems we don't disagree there.

Dont live in the us , but i live in holland and i think were supposed to be a queen state or king state or something but whatever they don't even have any legal powers and dont do anything really. come to think of it, nobody runs this country at all ... hmm maybe we're all just to stereotyped or stoned out of our minds to give a fudge about "V.I.P" families and celebrities

To be fair, royal families serve as important figureheads and goodwill ambassadors who tour other countries and meet foreign diplomats. The gripe that most people have with them is the hereditary nature of their power.

I DON'T. Why should I? On top of that, I'm annoyed by the royal wedding ring infomercial.

So they get to travel around the world for free and meet some of the most interesting global figures? In that case I would pay money to do the job these guys do.

Considering what a financial state the UK is in, it's really pissing me off right now that they have a huge fortune and do nothing.

I care very much. But only because I'm the true heir to the British Throne. Seeing these pretenders living it up when I'm out here stranded on Maui is just too much to tolerate.

If you could go to the UK but only to see this wedding, would you go?

I know this thread died out, but now the wedding is about a week and a half away and suddenly I'm hearing about it again. It was just on the news.

I also forgot to mention something earlier. Wasn't the British government hiking college tuition rates? And now the people are going to be paying for some of these functions?

      How sad.

The only people I hear talking about the Royal Wedding tend to be people telling me they don't care about it.

The taxpayer issue is something, but the revenue from tourism the wedding will bring in London alone ought to more than make up for that.

The monarchy is an old system that doesn't really fit in today. The majority of people in Britain would probably agree to that, and that number increases with every new generation. But abolishing it overnight wouldn't be a very realistic solution, and I quite like how they've redefined themselves to fit the times as best they can. They've been outside of the government and any legislative authority for some time now, and have used that to become a figurehead of the nation, rather than of the ruling body.

They work to promote charity work, with a patronage system. They are a diplomatic boon in that they can make impressive state visits to various other countries without being too tarnished by any unpopular moves by the political party in charge, because they aren't part of it. Tourism wise they're a money maker. They're a cultural and historic institute that is worthwhile for the sake of 'interesting' to some degree.

As it is now, with no real governing authority in the crown, the unfairness of the hereditary system they have is no more unfair than a kid being born with rich parents.

Of course I care about it.

Royal Wedding is damn well about the best Fred Astaire movie I've ever seen. Makes your heart want to tap dance up the ceiling.

Except the rich kids parents probably pay taxes, rather then taxes payed to him. Still, you make a good deal of sense. Perhaps the government should acknowledge the royalty and do nothing to take it away but stop funding it.

It may sometimes be a pleasant thing to have things others don't have, although it might be useless. It makes the world colorful, nothing good or bad, for nonsense though

I'm studying at the university of St Andrews (where they met for those who don't know) so it's kind of hard to avoid at the moment. They visited here a month or so ago and the press has been buzzing around quite a lot. Although I don't really think that a monarchy really has a place in the modern world it's still a bit of fun to celebrate. We're having a garden party with lots of pimms and watch the wedding on TV just to be very British

I care about down-to-earth celebrities who've become famous over reasonable, good qualities or traits and not because they've been born into a life of pure indulgence. The Royal Wedding hype is bullshit, I'm sorry but that's my opinion. Too much money has been wasted on security for honeymoons and... massive wedding cakes.
We all live in a kind of continuous dream. When we wake, it is because something,
some event, some pinprick even, disturbs the edges of what we have taken as reality.

I'm not. I really do love that movie, and it influenced later film and media as well (with that ceiling dance alone).

I for one am attending. One appreciates tradition such as this far more readily when an active part of proceedings.

I love the overdone baroque of it all. And the carriages and horses and all the people with tears in their eyes under overcast skies
