The only people I hear talking about the Royal Wedding tend to be people telling me they don't care about it.
The taxpayer issue is something, but the revenue from tourism the wedding will bring in London alone ought to more than make up for that.
The monarchy is an old system that doesn't really fit in today. The majority of people in Britain would probably agree to that, and that number increases with every new generation. But abolishing it overnight wouldn't be a very realistic solution, and I quite like how they've redefined themselves to fit the times as best they can. They've been outside of the government and any legislative authority for some time now, and have used that to become a figurehead of the nation, rather than of the ruling body.
They work to promote charity work, with a
patronage system. They are a diplomatic boon in that they can make impressive state visits to various other countries without being too tarnished by any unpopular moves by the political party in charge, because they aren't part of it. Tourism wise they're a money maker. They're a cultural and historic institute that is worthwhile for the sake of 'interesting' to some degree.
As it is now, with no real governing authority in the crown, the unfairness of the hereditary system they have is no more unfair than a kid being born with rich parents.
