Although there's no real consensus on the relationship between LD's and OBE's, I'll just give you my 2 cents. Don't take it as fact, I'm only going by my own experience.
I don't really think there is any difference between LD's and OBE's. In my opinion, OBE's are simply highly vivid lucid dreams of one's surroundings. An OBE can be triggered during sleep paralysis, when the brain triggers highly vivid and realistic hallucinations. These can often be the feeling of leaving your body, and I've had a couple where I was able to fully apprehend the room I was asleep in, in unbelievable detail- the kind of detail you just don't notice when you're awake. IMO, this was nothing more than information about the room stored in my subconscious and played back to me in a very vivid lucid dream. -These are the kind of things hypnosis is sometimes used for. (like getting you to remember things you couldn't recall in a normal state- it's all there in your subconscious, old memories, the exact setup of a room the last time you looked) I'd like to hear the experience of someone who has both had a LD/OBE and memory hypnosis, but I'm going off on a tangent here...
What I'm saying is, I think OBE's are just clever simulations created by a mind that needs stimulation. I don't believe the soul actually leaves the body (or spirit, whatever you want to call it), so don't worry about getting trapped outside your body (or for some superstitious folks, a demon is not going to hijack your body while you're out). Yes. I have heard that worry expressed. I know you don't want to hear it, but it is safe. Don't worry, just go into lucid dreaming with a positive "try me" attitude, and the results will be sweet. You might get what could be construed as an OBE, you might not. They aren't exactly common anyway. And I forgot to mention, welcome!
