Yes it is possible, it is rare, but it is possible. Sometimes we are not getting enough REM at night, due to different reasons such as insomnia, just not being able to get enough sleep or other factors. When this happens regularly, our body decides to "compensate" for the lost REM hours, thus it goes into REM as soon as you fall asleep. This is how power naps (basically napping 4 times a day for half an hour instead of sleeping) work.
