Exclamation Am I lucid dreaming, and how do I stop myself from waking?

Recently I've been putting a lot of focus into this website just out of interest. I love to dream and the emotional effect the day after an intense dream is like nothing else.

After reading a fair amount about lucid dreaming and the skills you need to be able to achieve this I realized I had some work to do because I just can't remember dreams if I try for the life of me. I followed the tips and began yelling to myself before sleep "remember your dreams Scott, remember every dream when you wake up". I always had a dream journal nearby in case I remembered anything. I only recorded one dream and it was probably pretty half-@$$ed because I don't remember dreams clearly or fluidly at all.

Ok enough of the boring stuff.. so what i explained has been over the last three weeks, and since the dream I recorded it had been at least 6 or 7 days since I remembered dreaming anything at all. I even tried timing my REM at 4.5 and 6 hours after i sleep with an alarm clock, I tried various buzzes and alarms too but nothing would work.

Finally, last night I had a dream, actually several (I never remember more than 1) but one in particular I want to mention was I was with my best friend in my back yard I don't remember what I was doing but all of a sudden I remember this energy, almost like extreme power like i was the most powerful being in the world... just coursing through my veins.... so I felt in my mind that I now had the power to fly... so i began flying and after I got above my house about 40 feet and I seen the roof of my own house I remember thinking.. wow I'm dreaming... and as soon as I remember thinking that the effects of my dream dissipated in a matter of seconds. It was so frustrating but so rewarding at the same time.

In the future how do I prevent myself from saying that in my head, and how do I prevent waking up?!
Any help will do, thanks everyone who put the effort into reading this beast of a post.

That sounds like a great dream. Too bad you woke up right away. Why do you think you woke up? Did you get overly excited? Did you get distracted by feeling your real body in bed? There are some tricks you can use to keep yourself from waking up, but a lot of it is just first hand experience. You have to remain calm and engaged with the dream world.

"Why do you think you woke up? Did you get overly excited?"
Thats a good question, I know for sure I've never ever felt my real body before while dreaming... but maybe it could have been excitement? I thought that the fact that I realized I was dreaming was the reason I awoke but rethinking that, it's stupid because a lucid dream is realizing that you are and then controlling it beyond that haha.

I wouldn't say I had the ability to direct or control where I was going.. except when I felt that power in my veins all of a sudden I thought or knew I could fly, and I did. But at no point did I realize I was actually dreaming until I was about 40-60 feet above the ground and then I remember thinking "wow im dreaming, or, wow what a dream" something like that.

I've been reading posts about RC's and spinning to keep yourself in the dream but I don't understand how reality checks work and how they help, or how to spin or how spinning works, and I couldn't find anywhere to read about spinning. Just everyone kept mentioning they did it to keep themselves dreaming.

Im a clueless padawan just awaiting direction while doing a bit of research on the side.

I've wondered about that too... I havn't had such complete or willed expierences in Lucid Dreaming myself, but how to you 'spin'. It seems weird to me that you could do something so complex with a body that isn't your physical body. Does it even feel like you are spinning? Do you get dizzy?

Yeah, keep calm. IT also helps to interact with the dream world around you instead of just keeping still. Rubbing your hands helps. Also just saying "Increase lucidity" or "Increase Clarity" also sometimes helps.

      "Do not be amazed."

Amazement wakes you up. That dream is awesome man! I have only experienced that feeling of power coursing through my body once. I woke up, and I still felt it, like my whole body was humming and vibrating.

I used to wake up as soon as I gained lucidity for years, (unless it was a nightmare. )

Expect lucidity, and the amazement will decrease. Focus on remaining calm, and you can stay in dreams longer.

Hey Scot! Nice to see a fellow Ontarion on here .

I had the same problem both last night and the day before. They were my first lucid dreams after trying for a year, and both failed in different ways. The first one, I think I became lucid just as I was falling back asleep and I could almost feel my own body. I didn't wake up, or maybe I did and didn't notice, but regardless, it was my body which made it falter.

The second dream 'failed' because I was just so amazed by becoming lucid that I simply forgot about it and lost myself to the dream world! I think as time goes on however, we'll learn to control it and to deal with it. Just keep at it, it will all work out!

Rubbing in your hands in your dream helps to prolong your dream, it relaxes you or something, if I were you Id try that

Doing reality checks helps you to see the weird things in your dreams as what they are things in you dream. When you dont do reality checks your brain will think everything is real in your dream and you wont become lucid and just accept the dream. Keeping a journal how short it may be helps to increase dream recall, if you dont you might not even remember a lucid dream itself so...
