The drive can definitely help, just don't stress out too badly. And yes, keeping a dreamjournal is going to be one of the fundamental parts of being able to lucid dream.
One of the hardest parts of dream recall is the fact that, when you wake up, you have serious memory trouble. You're also tired. Typically, people will roll back over and go to sleep, immediately forgetting the dream they just had. Even if you review the dream in your head, you can still forget it. You have to work on having the discipline to sit up in the middle of the night, regardless of how tired you are, and at least write down a few key words from your dream. For example, "Sword", "castle", "Flying", "bushes", "facepaint". Something like that can be enough to trigger your full memory of the dream, but not writing down those few keywords can also cause you to lose it.
