      Does this count?

If I am in a dream and I make a conscious decision to run on all fours because I know that makes me go faster, but I still think it's real and don't realize it's a dream, does that count as lucid dreaming?

No, that counts as having a thought.

A lucid dream requires you to KNOW that you are dreaming.

In a nightmare you would most likely think a monster is scary. So no...

You don't need to be in control to be lucid, the one and only requirement is to know that you are dreaming which you did not. Better luck next time.
Noticed things in my lucid dreams: Not scare of death (kinda forgotten Freddy special power of killing in dreams, opps?) Huge ego which cause me to summon monsters, most DC are useless and don't even speak.
