im actually the exact same! i had lots of nightmares when i was little and my parents were getting sick of it, so i just started changing my dreams and POOF no nightmares.
for me, what's different, is i normally only remember my dreams if they are scary/ stressful, although i can normally always remember how i felt in my dreams. while dreaming, though, if it's not scary, most of the time i just let my mind babble for me because whenever i become lucid i always end up waking myself up and not feeling very well rested in the morning.
i talked to a couple friends about it, but no one else i know "becomes exhaused" from dreaming, so reading about it here is very helpful.
