I have an internal alarm clock. By that I mean, I can say to myself: "Wake up at x time", and usually, within 5 or 10 minutes, I almost always wake up at the time I said. That takes alot of practice though.
As for waking up to a real alarm clock, those have never really worked for me. It can be set all the way up, right next to me, and I'll sleep right through it. When I do wake up to it though, it usually isn't anything jolting, it just feels like I'm waking up normally.
The most i can say is, I think many people are different, and so you'll just have to try it a few times, and see what happens.
