Strange Dreams (well, for dreams anyways)

      Hey everybody,

I've been keeping a journal of my dreams, so far only three. Anyways, these dreams seem weird. The biggest thing is that they could happen in real life. I've never had dreams with a lot of weird stuff going on, just normal stuff. Stuff I don't want to do in my dreams. I get enough of it in real life.
Second, I don't seem immersed in my dreams. I never felt like I was "in" the dream, just watching it. There is sight and sound, but no other senses. It doesn't feel right.
I'm just asking if this is normal for just starting to remember my dreams again or if this is something that is out of place and I should try to correct.

      Thanks,
      Percy

      Hi Percy,

It seems to me you are saying that it's weird that your dreams are not weird. Anyway, research has shown that most dreams are focused on everyday life and do not contain much weirdness, so this is perfectly normal.

Second, I don't seem immersed in my dreams. I never felt like I was "in" the dream, just watching it. There is sight and sound, but no other senses.
I sometimes have dreams like that, but it's only a small percentage of all my dreams.

Yah. Dreams reflect what you think about. Tautology warning! If you want a more active fantasy life, maybe you should have a more active fantasy life :-). You could try being more adventurous in the fiction you consume - tv, books, whatever.

I'm not sure about the immersion; no ideas on that. All I can say is that if your dreams are different in that way, and it's not smething to do with your recall, then it's most likely a sort of habit, that has the potential to change.

W.r.t senses I think you should be able to change that. In Exploring The World of Lucid Dreaming theres an exercise where you go through the senses, pay attention to what you can sense now with each one, and imagine what you might sense in a dream. I think paying greater attention to your other senses during the day would help. Also if you run through your senses as an exercise before you go to sleep.

There's a classic question which is related to this: Do we dream in colour? 5 seconds Google didn't give me a proper answer, but I did find this: the rise and fall of the opinion that we dream in black and white coincided with the rise and fall of black and white film media. So what you see in waking life not only affects what you dream about, it also affects how you dream it!

Yes, just think about it... they don't pay you for all the time you spend practicing, stacking shelves and talking to customers in your dreams. We should start a Dreamers Union and demand fair payment for REM sleep.

Well, when you become lucid you can introduce all the craziness you want in your dreams.
