Well reality checks are supposed to happen during the day, so that they eventually make their way into your dreams, helping you to realise you're dreaming.
They best work with dream signs, things that tend to happen quite alot in your dreams, so that when ever you see or think of a dream sign in real life, you will do a reality check. Then hopefully in your next dream when one of these dream signs occur, you will do a reality check and become lucid.
You can also repeat to yourself that you will become lucid and know you are dreaming before you go to bed, this is the MILD technique.
