When in a LD, do you need to keep everything together through force of will, or will things you have created remain intact and unchanged. That is, once you create a dream world, can you just let it be or will things change or dissapear when you take your mind off of them?

Hey The Dream scenery tends to stay after you make it, or if you just say in the one you are in. The small detials fluctuate because you have to pay more attention to them to keep them stable.

if you are fully lucid, things generally stay the same, although they can change in minor ways. if you have just become lucid, are barely lucid, or are losing lucidity, it takes effort to 'hold on' to the scene, and for me personally only my hands remain unchanging.

Originally posted by William D Thanks, but could somone please tell me why your hands are so important in dreams? they are one of the most stable items in a dream. although the scene around you may change drastically, most often one's dreaming mind recreates one's hands fairly consistently. i do not know why this is. probably because we not used to being aware of our environment without 'looking out' of our body. if one is aware in a dream, it is almost as if our mind automatically creates a body for us. and hands are the most detailed and readily viewable part of that psuedo-body.

They will stay as you remembered them. I mean, does it bother you that they are gone if you don't need them? If you are looking for them, they will appear as you first though they would look like when you were searching for them. However, you might get a realization later on that the object wasn't as you designed it from the first place. This often happens in normal dreams, dunno about lucid ones.

Asher, I don't really agree with your hands thing. Checking your hands is a very prominent reality check and it works for many people, though not for all. I'd have to say with certainity that very many lucid dreamers have very odd and ever-changing hands in their dreams with usually more than 5 fingers on each hands and sometimes different textures etc. While this is the general crowd, I myself have never had stable or normal hands in dreams and changing them from 4-fingered to 8-fingered is the easiest thing ever (thought it's hard to count the exact number anyways).

As was said, the dream environment will generally stay the same, but it tends to shift quite a bit depending on the person. I tend to find myself in many locations during a dream and they change relatively quickly, while some people may be stuck in the same place. It really just depends. Keep in mind, though, that a stray thought (usually "what if...") can cause something to change very easily. -Amé

I'd have to say with certainity that very many lucid dreamers have very odd and ever-changing hands in their dreams with usually more than 5 fingers on each hands and sometimes different textures etc. While this is the general crowd, I myself have never had stable or normal hands in dreams and changing them from 4-fingered to 8-fingered is the easiest thing ever (thought it's hard to count the exact number anyways). noted it would be interesting to survey those with a hundred or more lucids under their belt...i would suspect that when having a non-lucid dream, or low-level lucid dream, the hands are quite unlifelike. yet when a high degree of lucidity is attained (perhaps by using the hands as a reality check, and noticing they are way off), i suspect most would say that the hands remain more stable than most other elements of the dream. i will give you an example. i had a dream where i was lucid, but not very. i was wandering around in the dark, trying to view my hands in dim patches of light, in order to stabilize the dream. at first they appeared as two bulbous replicas of my head, attached at the wrists (which obviously heightened the realization i was dreaming ), so i continued looking for better lighting to view my hands. as i looked at them in better light, they took on increasing realism, increasing my lucidity at each stage. soon i came upon a well-lit porch where i viewed my hands. they were so incredibly lifelike it astounded me, and i was granted complete lucidity. i explored the very realistic, stable house. if anything started to change in my environment, i looked at my unchanging hands, and the environment returned to stability. my other dreams are consistent with this example. i doubt you will find many lucid dreamers who will dispute the fact that one's hands are one of the most stable elements in any lucid dream. they may be unstable, but then almost certainly the environment is even more unstable. or to look at it from the other side of the coin- i have yet to hear someone describe a lucid dream where their hands were mishappen or abnormal, but the environment was stable and realistic...

In my second lucid dream (last night) I took the form of a giant bug-alien thing hopping along a highway tossing cars around. My hands were, well, alien-bug hands. Like big talons. One thing that I have noticed after perusing this forum for a while is that a lot of people do not like to change their shape during a dream. If they want to fly, they just do. They don't bother to turn into a hawk or something. I wonder why this is?

I think that, just like many thing, looking at your hands may differ from person to person. For example, reading printed text: I can see the text just fine if I'm reading something, though the next time it may look different or may not. It just depends.

I wonder why this is? personally, it is because i have the mental block that it is 'hard'. as in, flying is one thing, but turning into an eagle and flying i really should get past that though. good point.
