      I hope this a beginning...

Hello everyone, I'm very new to Lucid dreaming and haven't yet had a properly lucid dream.

However several nights ago I was having a nightmare, it went like this.

I was walking through a clearing with several buildings in the middle, I remeber one being a barn. There was a giant troll (much like the one from Lord of the Rings) that was fairly docile and was searching for something. There were lots of other people walking around and asking the troll if it would eventually kill them. The troll said that once it had finished searching it would not protect them any more and would kill them. Finally it stopped looking and went on a muderous rampage. All the people died horrible deaths, but I ran and hid in the barn. I crawled under a table and found my way to the door. I couldn't see the troll from the window so I crept out of the barn door. It was standing right over me and lifted its fist to strike. It was about then I realised there was a Playstation 2 controller on a strone near the entrance to the barn. I picked it up and pressed pause. The giant froze. I also realised that there was a Playstation 2 on the floor and pressed the power button. Everything went black and I woke up.

I had previously tried the turotials for several days. Was this a first attempt at controlling my nightmares. I'm so confused! I know I wasn't aware of my dream entirely, however I NEVER solve my nightmares, I always die in them.

Sounds like a breakthrough! Well done.

Have you started a dream journal yet? I'd definitely start one if you haven't - you can easily recognize patterns. There may have been past nightmares that you've solved, but just don't remember.

Anyway, welcome to DV - I'm sure you'll like it here.

Ditto on the dream journal advice. It will prove invaluable. Especially if you have interesting dreams like that.

But I'd say it is definite progress. I think one of the most universal methods of becoming lucid is as an involuntary reaction to a nightmare. If you are beginning to look for different methods of dealing with your nightmares, especially if they are methods that relate to the concept that what is going on isn't really happening (such as pressing pause on the controller to stop the troll) then I think it won't be long before one of your methods is to realize "wait a minute, this is a dream, so all I have to do is will the nightmare to stop." And boom, right then and there, you're lucid.

Keep it up, man! And welcome to DV.

Hey Bude! Glad that you joined us.

Just as one can become lucid and not have control, it's also possible to have control and not be lucid. I can think of a couple of dreams of mine which were the latter. I do think that this is a step in the right direction, a "pre-lucid" dream as I would call it. Recognizing that there was something out of the ordinary was a step in the right direction. I'm sure that if you keep working on it (doing reality checks, keeping a DJ, etc.) you'll have a lucid in no time.

Let us know if there are any questions we can answer. Sweet lucid dreams!
