Welcome!!! Dream Journals can be handwritten or written in a computer. It depends on the person whether or not it effects recall, so I would try it both ways and see what you get.
There really is no "usual" since we can't really put everyone into a group and study it. Immediately after my first lucid I started having 5 a month, but I was reading book after book and learning as much as possible so that I wouldn't do it wrong and making sure that I tried the most reliable methods first (RCs and mantras) and getting 8 hours each night. I see lots of people move about that speed as well, it is my personal belief that if you are earnestly trying to LD and researching it (not just trying a billion techs out), anyone can LD once a week. I have yet to see someone prove me wrong, get 8 hours of sleep, DJ everything (check out my DJ system in my signature), and stay consistent with what you do. If someone else can do it, then so can you. We are all equal.
Many disagree with me on this I believe. I think that some people do find what technique works best for them quicker than others, but after your first LD, you have a technique that works, stick with that one for a while and get it better and better. You can do it! If you have any questions feel free to ask. I would recommend checking out the DVA:
