RCs are mainly to confirm whether or not you're dreaming. You can become lucid without them, which is most often the case, then when you're standing there in the dream, you do one to test whether you're actually dreaming or not. Sometimes you don't even need one because...
1) You're so sure it's a dream (seeing unrealistic things in the location, people's behavior, etc.) that you don't need to check.
1) You're not too aware, so it doesn't occur to you to do a reality check in the first place, but you're still lucid.
And yeah, apple juice is my favourite when it comes to dream vividness. It's tasty, too.
