Well, One thing you could have done in this situation, is use your visualization skills to create a dream world around you, because obviously you were aware of your dream body, yet you waited for something to happen. Keep that in mind. The next time you do a reality check, and you confirm that your breathing, try to take in all that you see and set yourself in place.
