      The Existence of Dream Guides.

The idea of a dream character whose sole purpose is to guide, protect, and teach you in the dreamworld, is one that has intrigued me for quite some time now. At first i thought this notion was impossible. How can something that I created/imagined teach me things I wouldnt already know? In my mind, I was the creator. The all knowing and all seeing. That is until I had the most amazing experience with a dream figure to this day.

DREAM: I find myself in an unknown house, sitting in a room conversing with a person i had never met. He is an older gentleman about 50-60 years of age. He strikes me as a very calm, humble man. His words are very clear and articulate, and everything he says seems to be the wisest advice I had ever received.( Too bad i cant remember any of it!) As the conversation continues, he arouses the subject of dreams. The way he is speaking gives me the feeling that he knows something I don't. Its very odd because the next thing he says to me is, " How do you know you're not dreaming right now?" I say to him, " I can prove I'm not dreaming with a simple realty check." With the intention of proving him wrong, I proceed to RC. I look at my hands...normal. I smirk at him. I pinch my nose and to my surprise...I BREATH RIGHT THROUGH IT! I become lucid and I look at him and say, "I AM dreaming!" He gave me this proud look of approval, as if THAT'S what he was trying to get me to see all along.

When I awoke i was completely dumbfounded. Was this my dream guide? I couldn't believe what just happened to me. How is it possible for my dream characters to know that I'm dreaming before I do? After that experience, I have a new found respect for each and every dream character i may come across.

My question to you all is: What are your theories on dream guides? Do you think dream guides are created by the dreamer in the specific dream, or do they already exist inside of us just waitiing for the dreamer to find them? Please feel free to share your personal experiences with dream guides, and what you may have come to learn from them!

      Peace, Love, and Lucidity.

Many people believe that Dream Guides are a manifestation of one's subconscious, and this subconscious is often more knowledgeable than the conscious mind (like you've learned - the man knew you were dreaming before you did!).

Because Dream Guides could be formed from part of your subconscious, they may present themselves as wise individuals who are willing to help the dreamer in their LDing practices. In your experience, it definitely sounded as if your Dream Guide wanted you to become lucid. If you had been aiming for a lucid dream in waking life, perhaps he wanted to help you because he knew you were trying to achieve one. My theory is that Dream Guides do not present themselves until you show initiative and enthusiasm for the dream world.

We all live in a kind of continuous dream. When we wake, it is because something,
some event, some pinprick even, disturbs the edges of what we have taken as reality.

So how do I know for sure that this is my TRUE dreamguide? Is it possible to have more than one? And how do i tell the difference between a random dream figure and a dream guide?

I don't think I have met my dream guide quiet yet (Maybe last night but still unsure) Next time you are lucid just ask him a bunch of questions. Congrets on finding your dream guide.
Lucid dreaming takes three things: Patience, practice, and perseverance.

All you really have to do is ask him.

From my own experiences, other dream characters won't normally say that they're a Dream Guide unless you "will" them to say it. A true Dream Guide can have a powerful presence in the dream; when they are around, things may feel different or you might get something in your gut telling you to find out where they are. They are also more knowledgeable and often more literate than normal DCs, sometimes it's like talking to a normal person - you could even have an engaging conversation. I've heard of a few cases where someone has had more than one Dream Guide, so it's not impossible to have more than one.

Yeah i know what you mean...this man had a very distinct presence. I felt like he was someone I could trust, and I didnt even know him. I dont know how to explain it really. He was definately different than any other dream character I've encountered.

I've found that my dream guide doesnt just show up: i have too seek him out. Look for recurring dc's, and try asking them questions.
(However, my dg isnt even human, so maybe its different for me.)

Wow...see that's a different way of thinking. It never even crossed my mind that a DG could be something other than human. Thank you for expanding my mind to explore other options! I think that will be my next goal is to talk to my dream characters and try to seek out my DG.

Can you expand on that please? Do you mean sort of the same thing Puffin added at the top?

I mean that God might have given us a second spirit to help us make sense of our lives (subconscious) and our dream guide is the directing figure of it.

I'm so fascinated by the whole concept of Dream Guides and your dream is just awesome. How can someone be not interested in a mysterious figure, who can guide you, make you lucid (even though in the most of the cases it seems that subconscious tries to keep us from becoming lucid), share some great things with you...I'm sooo seeking out my DG in upcoming lucids!
      Thank you for sharing it

Oh yeah its a very interesting topic! I have already made that my next goal to find my dream guide(s). Thank you for your post and good luck with your search! I really enjoy reading other peoples ideas, interests, and viewpoints about lucid dreaming. How nice would it be to have your own personal guardian and friend in the dream world!

I would think that subconciousness could choose any form it wanted, thus enabeling an unlimited number of possible dream guides. However, normally I think it would choose to use a few recognizeable ones, so it wouldn't confuse you too much.
      Slip inside my head
Watch how my dreams unfold, watch my fantasy in work
Watch the beauty, watch the details. Isn't it amazing?
I love you, and I welcome you into my world
If you are lucky, there will be music playing.

That makes a lot of sense! I didn't really think of it that way until okami27 above stated that his dream guide isn't even human. I can only assume its a wolf by the context and pictures. That's an awesome approach. So have you found your DG and if so...how?

I've read of dream guides having multiple forms but still being essentially the same dream guide.

That's interesting...so you're saying that it could potentialy be the same dream guide that would take the form that he/she/it feels would be the most comfortable or beneficial to the dreamer in that specific dream. I like that idea. Thank you for sharing!
