Were you paying attention to the hypnotic imagery? If you were too focused on the task of going into SP, then going into the dream, you're never going to fall asleep. That's the goal, is to fall asleep, and you can't do that if you're too aware of what's going on, you need to go with the flow. Your consciousness anchor should be in the very back of your mind, you shouldn't be focusing on it though.
Don't try to force it, just let your body fall asleep naturally, the way it always does. The only difference is that you have an anchor keeping you conscious. Don't resist the hypnotic imagery, embrace it; allow it to take you into sleep.
If you're feeling afraid, that is going to be counter-productive to achieving SP as well. Just remember that it's all hallucinations and that none of it is real. Try to stay relaxed as much as you can, and to combat the scary HI you can try to imagine sights and scents that are pleasant.
