      Introduction and a question

      Well, first, an introduction.
Hi, my names Ben, i hope everyone is well

      Now for my question..
Basically, i have been having a reoccuring nightmare, where i wake up (in my dream) and turn over in my bed, and there is a featureless, blacked out man looking over me.
If anyone has any insights or a way to remedy this, PLEASE, I am begging you to share your thoughts, because i'm not sure I can take it any longer. It's not nice waking up in a cold sweat, shaking, genuinly fearing for my life.
      Thanks in advance

Welcome to dreamviews! As for your question the blacked out man is most likely a dream sign. So do a reality check first thing whenever you wake up.

Sorry to be awkward, but I'm new to all this, what is a reality check?

Honestly that sounds like your shadow persona.

The thing about recurring dreams is that they usually have something to do with a choice or a question or some aspect of ourselves that we don't understand or want to know about. Facing fears or understanding these aspects of ourselves is what usually gets rid of the recurring dream.

Carl Jung said that we each have these personae that may or may not feature recurrently in our dreams. One such persona is the shadow which is supposed to be the repressed self. It's the side of ourselves that we don't want to know about or accept and so we hide it away from the world. This persona often features in your dreams as a bully or as someone who is terrifying. Jung said that we really should accept it as part of ourself in order to be able to deal with it a bit better. Kind of makes sense right?

I could be completely wrong of course and he could be some random arse, mutated, character from a computer game that you played when you were a kid but considering you are seeing this figure in a recurring dream, and he's in the bed with you (possibly is you), and is frightening you, I'd wager it's at least a possibility that he's some side of yourself that you don't want people to know about or see.

I hope I've at least provided food for thought.

      Welcome to DV!

I think you got great replied, but I recommend you to start working on lucid dreaming. We have great tutorials to help you out.

When you are able to turn lucid (being a recurring nightmare, it will be easy) try to dream this nightmare again. Once you see the guy, you will turn lucid and ask him, "Who are you?", "What do you represent." He will explain what will go one, you will earn an achievement from this and you will not have the same nightmare again.

Please, drop me an MP if you like to talk!

That did make sense, apart from that he is not IN the bed, but standing by the side of the bed with his head tilted down towards me face, but i will definitely think this through, although i can't think of anything about myself that i don't accept, both bad and good sides.
      Thanks

I tried lucid dreaming last night, i'm not sure if it worked, but i can remember the dream i had last night before i had the nightmare and i seemed to be able to chose what i was doing in some cases? Correct if i'm wrong.
That was pretty screwed up in it's own right, but not scary, thankfully. But i will try again tonight, because as far as i can tell, i have 2 dreams, a relatively screwed up, but not scary at all, and that nightmare, plus, i was talking to my mum earlier about it and she said that my younger sister and my father also mentioned dreams about a blacked out figure, but they were never so close.
I don't know if that matters, but i found it rather intrigueing
(please excuse my bad spelling, i failed at english)
Anyway, Thanks for the advice and i will be sure to PM you at some point

That is rather odd that your family would have the same or similar dreams. Perhaps they'd told you about them at some stage and that's the only reason you're having them?

Either way, here's the thing, it's not real; so it can't hurt you, but if you do learn to become lucid — which can take months, not just a night — then you'll be able to either a) kick his arse or b) ask him what his deal is.

The dream you had where you had some control doesn't sound like lucidity. If you know you're dreaming, then you're lucid and can choose what to do. But keep it up. Read this tutorial — it's full of awesome advice — and go from there.
