Meditation could help, yes. Mantras throughout the day and/or before bed would help too. Recognizing recurring objects or themes in your dreams (dream signs) would also help you attain lucidity. Practicing some sort of awareness would help you become more aware in your dreams as well (I recommend for beginners). Supplements and foods can help you achieve lucidity as well. OpheliaBlue mentions in Lesson 1 that drinking milk before bed can help to make you more aware in your dreams. How does it work? No idea, but I'm drinking milk regularly now! Certain cheeses can help people be more aware in dreams too. You could also incubate a lucid dream, look at this for some examples.
psycho, how many LDs have you had? Sometimes that excitement happens a lot to beginners. Once people get LDs a little more regularly, they get less excited and can stabilize the dream.
As for forgetting to stabilize the dream, try including that in your plans for your next LD. Thinking about and planning what your next LD will be like will help you remember what to do.
