Provigil (modafinil)

We don't need to sleep By Arcadia

In the October 2004 issue of Readers Digest they have an article on Provogil or the generic name, modafinil.
While desighned to help narcolepsy it was soon evident to help aid rescue workers or people on 24 hr. shifts, miliatary or whomever fells they quilify. It seems as though increasingly anyone can get this drug if they complain to their doctor that they are groggy all the time.
As quoted by Michael Wincor, "If sleep were that unnecessary, it was a major evolutionary mistake. Why did we evolve to need seven to eight hours of sleep a night if all it takes is an external agent & then we don't need to sleep? It's hard for me to concieve that."


Unlike other amphedmines it does not stimulate the nervous system because it works in a more localized part of the brain the hypothalimis, which controls the sleep wake cycle.

It was initially approved by the FDA in 1998 for narcolepsy.

That is so strange and I feel almost certainly really bad for you if used in the wrong way.

Since I was born I have had trouble sleeping. My mother said I would never sleep more than two hours. I woke up at 330 am this morning at its so frustrating. Yeah I cope but would I like and benefit from a full nights deep sleep, hell yeah.

I wouldn't trust any drug that can continually keep you awake. If naturally it messes with you if you do not sleep then I don’t see how a drug induced state could be ok. It doesn’t make sense. If used for an illness like narcolepsy then yeah I can see its benefits but just to stay awake, I’m sure it would work but would you go unaffected by the side effects, well I think not.

I can't imagine that someone would not feel that some side effects would accur at some point.....

Are there not only physical benefits to sleep, but mental ones as well? I mean, doesn't the lack of sleep effect a person's state of mind - could someone go crazy without sleep?

I also thought of dreams as necessary to help us cope with certain disapointments in our waking life. With the exception of bad dreams/nightmares, regular dreams help us experience certain things we never can in real life. Flying, being a rock star, superhero... whatever.

Maybe I'm going off on a tangent here -- bottom line, SLEEP IS GOOOOD! :D

Hey Sensi (last and furthest tangent I will go on, really) are you in Italy(flag) or New Zealand("Aotearoa")? I've been facinated with Australia for so long even though I've yet to set foot there. I'm even considering picking up and relocating there someday, but I have no idea where to begin. I heard New Zealand is even nicer.

Also noted was that certain biochemical systems go awry when somone tries to survive on four hres or less of sleep, triggering symptoms of type two diabetes, memory loss & premature aging. Nurses working rotating shifts for thirty years, never falling into regular sleep patterns had a 36% increase of breast cancer!!!

Did you create your Avatar? Yeah I do live in New Zealand. My father was Italian and I have strong ties to my Italian roots so I choose to carry the Flag. Yeah New Zealand is so dam beautiful but so is Australia. I have lived in Australia as well. I travelled around on the back of a motorbike which was a wonderful way to see the country. I think both places are definitely worth a visit.

Hey Howetzer, your eyes freak me, well they just remind me of a dream where Maynard’s (the lead singer of Tool) eyes where like that. It was weird to say the least. I like your real life pik's more, it’s good to see you enjoy a bit of basketball, I love the game.

Yes you can go insane (for a while, as far as I'm aware - I'm not a sleep doctor) from lack of sleep. Scientists performed an proper, controlled sleep deprivation experiment. After a few days the voulenteer thought they were out to kill him and he hated them, before locking himself in the toliet to go to sleep. So, yeah.

Funny you say that about tool because addias had a avatar awhile back that looked just like me and he said it was Maynard from tool. .... That's kinda wierd.

My friend was in BUDS training. The special forces for ther Navy. And along with any special branch of the military they go through a "hell week" Thay are deprived of sleep, Only the strong survive. I would bet they would love to get a hold of Provigil for that week.

Basketball, I used to play lots when I was younger and still at school. I loved it so much. I still play now but only for fun and it has been quite a while I must admit. We just get a crew of people and go to a local school and rip it up for as long as we can. Always brings a smile to my face and a good way to spend an afternoon in the sun as I’m sure you will know. Mostly play with guys but there is a couple of us girls that play. Just thinking of it makes me want to sort a game soon, it’s been too long.

When they go through that training is that a full week with out any sleep? If so how dose it affect them. I've done consecutive days with out any and it’s not good at all.

I believe he had said it was three days. Then Kind of of and on. They would never let you rest well. Then see how you react under pressure.

That’s pretty full on to do that to someone who would be used to normal amounts of sleep. Like I've said I’ve had sleeping issues all my life so i am probably more used to coping with less than most? When I have not been able to sleep for days it gets pretty intense and then to try and act under pressure, well that just makes me laugh.
