I say "I'm dreaming." then I go on to think about what dreaming is. "Well if i'm dreaming then...everything here is just my imagination" and I usually get control off that.

I think this kinda proves that lucid dreaming abilities or disabilities are physiological capacities of the mind during dream state. Like some can fly and some can't. There have been many different cases of effects when one becomes lucid vs non-lucid. Like waking up when lucid or unable to make things appear when lucid. Lucidity is a change of state from the 'unconcious' dream state to a more familiar waking state. I think the change affects both ability and thought processes in the dream. So maybe one can fly while non-lucid but can't when lucid.

I disagree, respectfully. I think it has more to do with the OP's expectations. Since lucid dreaming is in our minds, anything imaginable is possible. There are ways to get around monsters appearing when the OP says a phrase in her or his dream, for example.
