Reading music invented by your subconcious

I used to play the piano, and a few months ago I had a series of dreams where I was playing a piece of music straight off a page. The notes were forming up a few bars ahead of where I was playing, and I was getting them all right. In real life, my sight-reading is abysmal, but in this dream I was (or maybe just thought I was)- doing it perfectly.

I could compare it loosely to reading a random story or just a page of writing in a LD- one which just forms up subconsciously as you read it.

      My questions are these:
      1. Have you ever played a made up song in a LD? What was it like?
      2. Do you think the notes on the page could have been correct? (the power of the subconscious mind maybe gives better focus !!)
      3. Do you think it would ever be possible to recall the piece of music exactly and compose it in the waking world? -That could really ease the workload of a professional composer...

My answer to question number 1: I haven't but thanks because I'm going to try that, imagine that, you could create your own stage and stuff and get loads of DCs to come watch you haha performing live in a dream would be awesome.

Answer to number 2: I dunno but I highly doubt they were real songs probably just random notes but who knows...

Answer to number 3: maybe? lol

I don't know, I can hear crazy music (of any instrument that I play) in my head whenever I want but I don't have the capacity to just turn around and play it or write it down.

      1. Not in an LD
      2. Yeah I do
      3. Depends on your abilities

      1. No but i'm gonna try that.
      2. Yes I think the mind can work faster in dreams.
      3. Yes, there's a story of a guy who in his dream the devil was playing the violin for him. I forgot the name of the piece. He didn't remember it exactly though. but it sure is possible.

I've been playing the piano since I was five...

this is a really cool idea
Next time I'm in a dream I'm gonna conjure sheet music and a piano and see what happens.

I have dreams of playing songs, and they are either real songs, or they are just made up songs that just make themselves up as i play it. On stage.

I had a non-lucid a few days back with me playing guitar. There was a girl in my room playing guitar and i just joined in and started playing the same song she was playing. I had never heard the song before, so i guess my subconscious made it up on the fly. I wish i could have remembered how it went, because it sounded pretty good. All i remember is using an open D major chord. In another dream, i saw a picture of a music staff with a few notes on it projected on the wall. I thought to myself that i could read it, but i didn't attempt to.

I think there is a lot of potential with music and lucid dreams. If i get proficient enough at lding and playing guitar, i might just try asking my subconscious for some awesome songs to play (granted that i can remember how they go when i wake up).

When I compose I am playing or writing music I hear in a stream of consiousness. The only difference between this music in waking life and in dreams is that in waking life I know I am just hearing it in my head. I doubt that you could imagine sheet music accurately, sight read it perfecty, and create a good song unless you were insanely good at sight reading.

The other night I had a non-lucid dream where a friend (dream character) told me to listen to these variations on Beethovens 9th. I dont remember what it sounded like, but it totally blew my mind at the time. Too bad I didnt realize that I composed it.

You should try asking dream characters to play you some music. Go into a record store in a dream and tell the dream characters that work there to put on the greatest music they have ever heard. Unless they play a song that you know, it is completely your composition.

Let me know if you figure out how to remember the music in your dreams accurately.

That's what I was wondering about. Maybe sight reading ability soars when the body is asleep, less distractions or something. I can sight read- but slowly. Because I have the information in my head (eg: bottom space treble clef = F etc), is it possible that the time it takes -for the brain to recognise the symbol and access the appropriate "store" to find out which note it is- could be dramatically reduced in a dream state? That's a complicated sentence... I don't think it's beyond the ability of the subconscious mind.

Also, I would imagine it works in reverse. Years of seeing notes on the page and relating it to a key... It's probably possible to play something and have the subconscious mind place the notes on a stave.

Look at hypnosis. Forgotten or hazy memories can be recalled in great detail by influencing the subconscious- even when the person can't consciously access them. Sounds like the same principle.

This will be one of my new goals.

      1. Yes, I believe I have. A few weeks ago, in fact. At the time I thought it was real (in a LD actually), though I don't remember the words, I don't think that the song existed. Just 2 days ago I sang an actual song "sleighbells ring are you listnin?..."

      2. No clue

      3. Oh sure! But not for the average person. This person would probably would have to like dreams to even remember most dreams in the first place. So, great recall for sure! Not even I could remember a whole song from a dream. See above ^^. And it wasn't even that long!
If you see a strange typo in my post, blame my iPad for that.

Combine great recall with musical ability and a photographic memory and we've found our man!

I think most likely you just thought you were sight reading, and really what you were hearing was completely different. Or, the notes arranged themselves to fit the music you were hearing.

Its just like reading a book in a dream. You may be able to think up a pretty good story, but it wont already be writen in the book and stay written. The words will change as you ar reading it to make it make more sense (even though books dont make sense in dreams).

When you are asleep 10% in concious and 90% is subconcious. You have no logic, its just all weird thoughts. Sight reading in your dreams accuretly, wouldnt just appear and teach you. Its from your own thoughts in your conciousness when your awake. So what i am saying is, if you are an excellent sight reader, it will probs appear in your dreams that you are an excellent sight reader. If you have a dream about being an excellent sight reader, but you are rubbish. Its not accurate sight reading, your just dreaming that you can do it. Whether you no its accurate or not, you wont know. Unless your lucid. So you can explore it prooperly. But you will only know unless you have done it in your real awaking life. Your dream wont just come up with something accurate unless you have had some experience looking at it through your eyes in waking life. Then its like processed in your sub concoiusness. Thats why we dream about it.

      Could be true.

Exactly, that's what I'm saying. I was lucid, and the notes appeared to be correct (unless my mind was fooling itself as bengron suggested ^^)

True, but like I said, I can sight read (albeit slowly). The information is there, so why couldn't the access time be sped up?

If you give me a sec I can give you an exact piece from a dream as I wrote it on staff paper upon waking. To be fair it is more of an ominous tone than a song. Meant for singing.

Well the music is really just my interpretation, as it was really represented by this symbol:

      But here's the real music:

It would repeat endlessly, though I'm not sure how you show that in a staff.

I just played it on my guitar. I think it sounds like some type of chant; something you might hear with a large group of monks chanting at a monastery. I think your right; it does have an ominous sound.

I take it that's treble clef? Who was singing/chanting it in the dream?
Any more submissions, bring em on people! I'll get one up eventually.

A classroom full of people, and the monk thing was spot on.

Edit: not sure what cleft, but the high was pretty high. Like, not opera high, but to the point where most people can't hit well. Still, the low was pretty low. I only work in treble (play the trumpet) but it probably was. Was very groggy when I wrote this and I can't be certain anymore.

      Here's a part of my today's journal:

"In one of the other dreams I was in my room and I was going to play the guitar. I pretty much suck and am unable to play a lot of different types of music. When I played the first chord it sounded like a song I knew so I started playing that. The sound quality was amazing and I was playing awesome! The song I played was both Nirvana - There's Something in the Way and Heart - Barracuda, which is only possible in the dream world. After a while I realized that even if I hit the chords wrongly or not music would still play, I checked the cable and it saw it was disconnected. So, while music went on, I reconnected the cable so I could continue playing even though I wasn't sure if I wanted to. It was then that I was awoken."

I had to have breakfast immediately and was extremely confused as I had been half awake and half asleep experiencing the weirdest dreams, such as this one, for half an hour or so.

Mostly music is an amazing experience in my dreams. Not only do I hear the music, I also feel and see it. Many times the world around me actually transforms accordingly. If I have time to search my dream journal properly I'll get back to you with more examples.

I'm afraid I'll have to disappoint you on composing and reading music though. I can't do the last thing, never did the first thing and as I previously said, it's a completely different experience!

I've been a musician for almost a decade now. I can tell you I occasionally get the same thing. I play mostly by ear, so my reading is lacking. I can DO it, just not as fast as my friends.

A couple of times I've had sheet music in my dreams. I've been remembering a little bit of it at a time, so I'm about 3/5 of the way through the music written down here in the real. I know it's the same music, because the melody is omnipresent throughout my dream.

How epic is that? We're music geeks!

Well, when I finally get it all written down, you'll be the first to know! I've been getting about 1 a month. It's nice. Thanks to lucid dreaming I have the memory for detail necessary to remember the music.
