Ways to RC without being a retard

Here are some ways I do RCs without being looking like a freak.


Checking my watch
A great RC for me in my dreams. I have to check my watch twice, so I pretend I don't get a good enough look at it first (as a lot of people look at their watch and don't actually take in the time).

Looking at my hands
When I ever want to look at my hands I either pretend I am looking at them as if my hands are sore or if I am looking at the length of my fingernails, or I pretend I am stretching.

Hand rubbing
They always say you should stabilize after doing an RC, so in reality I often rub my hands as if I am cold or casually between my knees while sitting forward as if I am bored and trying to keep myself occupied.


What techniques do you use to act natural when doing an RC?

As I inhale through my nose, I casually reach up and pinch my nose shut, making a sort of slow sweep from the bridge down to the nostrils. This way, it looks more like I'm scratching an itch and less like I'm trying to suck my brains out. :P

I also use the finger-through-the-palm method, which I do discreetly by having my hands on my desk, and just kind of impatiently tapping one palm with one finger.

There is another few

Looking at your surroundings to see if you remember this place, or if it makes no sense

and

Looking through the side of your eye to see your nose, if you see it it's reality, if not, it's a dream

I've used my pencil to tap my hand in class, or to count my fingers

As for the nose check, I make it look like I'm going to rub the bridge of my nose (like what some people do when they're annoyed) but slide down and do a quick inhale

I wish I could be more aware in class, but I have to listen to the teacher. I can't be counting chair legs or people legs, or whatnot, lol

If I do remember to RC, I just either plug my nose or try to put 2 fingers through my palm. Sometimes I'll look at my surroundings.

The easiest one is to just try remember all events of the day and if any were really weird. If you suspect an LD, just do the nose pinch.

If you're already retarded, a cover-up isn't necessary.

whenever i plug my nose to RC nobody has a clue and they dont really think its out of the ordinary if they do notice

I agree, just remembering how you got to where you are at that moment has never failed me. It doesnt look retarded either...unless people can read your mind.

Brilliant! Exactly what you want...wish I was at that point. :P Still trying to keep from zoning out quite so much...

I don't want to feel like I'm turning into a whackjob nutcase, so I just try to be more observant about things rather than question them. If I question something, then I RC

I just R/C in public and people sometimes give me weird looks. I don't care though. I do the hand-look and nose-pinch, but I'm not exactly discrete about it.

EDIT: But yeah, I generally do what Armistice does. Except I do it because I'm just lazy, not because I'm worried about insanity; a wet cat isn't worried about being tossed into a bath, so to speak.

I do the same things as Mario...

Yeah, I usually just discreetly look at my hands... The watch RC worked pretty well until my watch broke. Still, if I happen to see some text while I'm RCing I'll use it. No one's going to notice if you glance over to the same place twice. Or they might look that way to see what you're looking at.

I try to use my TK to make objects move or come to me. This requires little to no motion from me, except maybe opening my hand a little.

How about the old trying to poke a finger through your hand RC? :D

Thats a pretty good one. Although I'd probably expect it to not work, thus it wouldn't work if I was dreaming.

I look at some text, look away and if it changes im dreaming. Another good one is to tense that muscle in the neck and try to breath in.

It's scary but In the amazing sort of way. I did it before but as soon as I did it and was like "WTF?!" the dream ended. Weird feeling though! I use that RC the most.

Lol, I was really suprised last night when I did the nose one.
I was being chased by a guy and thought better RC. So I did and was like "WTF" I thought it was real life before that. like it felt insanely real :p

Too bad I woke up within 2 secs due to The Cusp's dream control thing... Instead of focusing on the guy chasing me, I change my focus to "wow, I'm dreaming"... Unfortunately this woke me up...

Don't acknowledge that you are dreaming with all attention xD

i try to put my thumb through my hand and make it look like i am wringing my hands, like when someone is thinking. I also act like i am scratching my nose and run my fingers over the outside starting at the top and eventually blocking my breath. I also sometimes just act like something is supposed to transform, in my mind that is.

Anyway... I usually reality check via digital clock which has proven reliable to me.

Finger through palm has scared me before though. Even when lucid, it's like watching your finger go through your freaking hand and it looks freaky. Like impossible.

Besides that, as much as I would love to not look like a retard, this can actually be harmful about how you interact with dream characters. If you are afraid to do a reality check in front of people in real life, you'll likely be afraid to do it in a dream. I speak from experience.

Even when I knew I was dreaming, I have still been concerned about what other dream characters are thinking.

So if you can find a way to reality check and not be concerned about what other people are thinking, that'd be good.

I do the watch thing, poke a finger through the hand thing, rubbing of the hands is great for when you become lucid.

But lately I've found that just asking myself if I'm dreaming or not on a regular basis is very helpful.

I use the look at hands technique. All you really have to do is think a reality check. "Am I dreaming" and look around. Once you have that feeling you are dreaming it should be pretty easy to tell.

In my opinion its not about being afraid. Just cautious that you don't look stupid. When I do RCs discretely or not it doesn't make a difference to my dream awareness.

With all the loonies running about these days, I'm pretty sure no one is going to care of you casually reach up and swipe your nose. No big deal. If you start looking intensely at your hands, you may attract a few stares, but nothing really life changing...

You should RC a lot in every job interview you go to. Just to be safe.

I look for the closest solid object. Telephone pole, brick wall, steel doors, etc. I close my eyes and give a running leap. If everything goes black, then I know I wasn't dreaming when I wake up. If I stay conscious, than I know I'm dreaming.

It sometimes attracts a little attention. Best to do in back alleys.

I try to use telekinesis, like making a pen float, or if I'm driving, making a sign shoot up out of the ground. :D

I may still look retarded if I'm staring intently at objects though, lol.

I try to recall what I was doing one hour ago. If I don't remember, or I just suspect that I could be dreaming, I would do a physical dream check such as the nose one, or making objects float.

I find that to focus and unfocus your eyes you can be a type of reality check.....let me know what you think.

i do it every hour im awake (people can think what they want,maybe my palm just hurts lol ...anyhow its never happened once in my dreams...

like i mentioned in a different post for me it just kinda dawned on me i was in a dream and poof lucid ... doesnt happen often enough still waiting to hear my watch chime while im actually dreaming

yeah i also thought that just asking yourself if your dreaming every hour on the watch chime ,was the main idea of a reality check,so it becomes repetitive , was the actual exercise, and the finger thru the hand would only enforce the idea

I stand up and run at full speed into the wall. It bothered my proff. and classmates for a while but now they don't sit near me any more.

Now I'm confused. What does dignity have anything to do with it? More people do "weirder" things than check if their dreaming or not. Heck, I do weirder things than that on a daily basis.

If I went to school and started poking my finger at my hands, trying to walk through walls, or attempting to use TK, nobody would give me any respect. As sad as it sounds, most people at my school loose respect for those who look slightly weird.

Some kids are like that at my High school too. I say screw them. If they judge people like that then they have no place.

Believe me, no one will care (or even notice) if you casually reach up and pinch your nose for a half a second (a socially acceptable way to scratch an itch, perhaps). Similarly, briefly poking the palm of your hand is extremely unlikely to draw any attention at all. Face it; people have way more going on in their lives to notice a few simple motions. If you knew how often people actually thought about you, you really wouldn't care at all.

Guy 1: "Okay, so dude, check this out: I was walking down the street, all cool-like, when I saw this dude totally reach up and pinch his nose shut for a split second! It was the weirdest thing I have ever seen, not even joking."
Guy 2: "NO WAY! What was wrong with that guy? What a freak! We should totally shun him when we see him again, and spread the word of his freaky little habits."
Guy 1: "I know, right? I'm gonna go tell everyone I know to watch out for this guy."

most of the time, when i question if i'm dreaming, i am usually convinced that i'm not, until i do an RC like reading something twice, or looking at my hands...if i'm dreaming, there is usually something not quite right about my hands...a thumb is too short or something...
