This may be the craziest thing I've ever said. For sure, it's crazy "out there", but will it be crazy here? If it is, I'm a newbie - forgive me.
I've been thinking if there would be any benefits to blocking your nasal passages with tissue during sleep. I can think of several:
Your sleep wouldn't be as deep and you wouldn't be as comfortable - your brain could detect something is up. (In my case, such awkward sleeping conditions have triggered FA in the past.)
It would probably make you very thirsty, because you're breathing only through your mouth. This thirst could help you wake up during the night after REM. (Affirmation: "I'll wake up after a dream when I'm thirsty".)
It would be easy to carry out a RC - you'd only have to close your mouth and see if you could still breathe.
You could condition yourself, by saying something such as, "I'll quench my thirst with that glass of water by the bed only once I've had a lucid."
If you'd accidentally fallen asleep after attempting something like FILD, you'd be likely to wake up again before morning.
However, one question is, by far, the most important question: would it be dangerous?
