can lucid dreaming help autistic people

hi all

i am very new to all this and just started a dream journal 5 nights ago.

the other day somthing ocooured to me. i have a disabled brother (very similar to autism), he is 15 and can say about 5 words in total and a lot of the time he tries to talk but we cant understand him.
he is very clever, he can work out electrical equipment very easily (eg cd players tv's). he also understands pretty much all we say.
so the problem is he cant communicate, you could say there is a barrier between his inner brain and his body.

well with dreaming you venture into you inner brain, you could almost say that it is at the core of the brain. and like i said, his problem is he cant communicate, and i have every reason to assume that in his dreams, he could well communicate as there would be no 'barrier' between his mind and his body, there is only his mind.

if he had a lucid dream, because it would still be in his dream, he may well be able to fully communicate also. just him dreaming about successful communication probably would be enough to help in real life.
but if he could conciously communicate in a lucid dream, this could help him break down the 'communication barrier' in real life, thus help him to understand how to talk.

teaching him lucid dreaming would be to hard for him to understand, but iv heard about devices that can initiate lucid dreaming.

i am very new to this whole concept of lucid dreaming and have never had a full on lucid dream, only semi concious ones.
have scientists looked into this concept, if not, could i be onto somthing.

what are your opinions on it

I know a lot about people on the Austistic spectrum, but what sepcifically does your brother have? You only stated that it's "very similar to autism".

I cannot specifically give you all of the information about what you need to know. I'm not sure what causes people with development disorders to not be able to communicate properly.

I can help with suggestions and theories if you want, hopefully they will be constructive and give you idea on what to do.

I suggest that you do teach lucid dreaming to your brother, even if it does nothing to develop his communication. Learning to lucid dream is a thrilling experience which everyone should take part in. Do you know if your brother has a good dream recall?

I don't think that lucid dreaming will help him out. Spending lots of time with him in real life talking to him and explaining everything may enable him to trust you more, this could possibly give you the chance to have him be more open with you and you could then help him improve his communication skills.

Asking someone with a problem like that to sort it out by them self in their dream could be like asking someone who doesn't know how to do maths to have a dream where they can try to work out how to do it them self, they wouldn't be able to do it because they cannot perceive what they are meant to be working out. That's one of the reasons why teaching him in real life would be a lot more constructive.

I don't think that your brother would have trouble picking up on learning lucid dreaming if you still want to teach him. Usually people with these disorders have creative minds. I think this would allow them to understand and learn lucid dreaming easier.

I think that the nature of his problem is going to determine if it can or can't help him in the ways that you'd like to help him. Being realistic, if it is a matter of him not being able to use his voice to communicate, he may be able to write or sign or use other means of communication. If it's the communicating that he has trouble with, it probably has something to do with the physiology of the brain itself. In which case I'm not sure that lucid dreaming would be able to 'cure' or help him, but, well, you never know. I'm not sure how severe his problems are, but if you can teach him to lucid dream it may help, and even if it doesn't, lucid dreaming is so awesome that I think everyone should learn/know it ;)

I can see it being very very difficult to teach someone who cannot communicate how to lucid dream, unless he can in fact understand everything that you tell him. Because it could be very hard to understand these things if you aren't able to ask questions :( But, good luck!! ;)
