Thread: I don't understand how you can be a natural LDer

Hey, I'm trying really hard not to offend natural LDers here, but I don't really get it. Like if you didn't already know that you could be conscious in a dream how can you?

What I mean is, I never had a LD until I got interested in it and realised such a thing existed, so if you didn't know such a thing existed, say when you were age 5, how could you have one?

I don't think I'm explaining it very well. I just don't see how you could dream something that you didn't know existed, like how could you suddenly know you're dreaming, if you didn't previously know it was possible?

Hope I explained that well enough, and hope I'm not offending anyone, I'd just like to know how it is possible to be a natural LDer, if anyone understands at all what I'm getting at!

Well all you need is one fluke random LD one time and then you know it is possible. How does that fluke happen? Well you must have noticed by now the subtle differences between dreams and reality. In most dreams things look different and feel different so all you need is a moment in a dream when you simply observe this difference and relate the experience to your experiences of dreams in the past.

That's what happened to me anyway. I stopped and looked around a minute and it just felt like a dream. After I had the suspicion it was not hard to find proof.

This is quite silly. I could say the same thing about dreaming. How could you dream if you didn't know it existed?

Some people are naturally dreamers and others aren't.

I never knew about LD as a small child, and never really controlled my dreams, but when I would get a nightmare, I would realize it was too scary, that it was a dream, and wake up.

I didnt hear about LDing until Highschool but I already knew that you could control your dreams when I had my first LD. I was like wait this is a dream and it isnt real....neat I can fly! Heck I even have WILD without hearing about it, which was an amazing and scary experince.

I remember when I was a kid I started randomly having lds and I came to the conclusion that there was a magic portal in my wooden closet door, since the age rings seemed to look like a portal. I thought that when I went to sleep my soul was sucked through the wooden door into another dimension. I would stare at the door before I went to sleep and pray that I would be sucked through it because I loved the dreams so much. I knew my parents would think I was crazy if I told them so I always kept it to myself unti I was about 11, once i told them my parents were in disbelief, but they never discouraged me. I kind of lost the ability around age 12 and I didn't get it back until I was about 17, since then I have put alot of effort into it and my ability has increased exponentially each year.

If you had to have someone explain LDing to you to LD, then how would it ever be discovered?

I was always into dreaming, and my first lucid came out of the blue when I realized that what was going on is impossible. Because I was so interested in dreaming in general, I assumed it was a dream and was pleased to wake up and end up googling "I HAD A DREAM WHERE I KNEW IT WAS A DREAM!" hahaha

What is the difference between this and a DILD after you know LDing is possible?

Most people wouldn't consider that to define the dreamer as a "natural" LDer, either.

Yeh, I'm beginning to wish I hadn't started this thread now, it seems like a stupid question! I think it's just because I never knew such a thing as being able to control dreams was possible at all until I was around 13. I never had a hint of lucidity until I started reading about it, but that's just me.

Of course someone had to have one naturally in the first place for it to have been discovered, it's just like I said from my perspective, without knowing it was possible, my subconscious never gave me a LD when I was younger.

You lucky lucky people to have them naturally! On the other hand though, I remember how amazed I was when I read about what was possible, I guess you guys just knew already so it's less of a surprise lol.

Anyway thanks for the replies, I guess I'm just annoyed I never got them naturally!

I don't think it's a stupid question, if it hadn't happened to me I'd have asked the same thing! I didn't have a clue it was possible until I realized that reality was completely different and just assumed it was a dream!

I got my first one three years ago. A year later I had a very crappy one. A year later another crappy one. I always just went to bed thinking "I hope I have another one of those dreams tonight!" but never would. It wasn't until I started keeping a dream journal and recognizing my dream signs and conducting reality checks that I started having them at high frequencies. And now that I'm not keeping my dream journal I haven't had one in a while So just because you have your first one naturally, doesn't necessarily mean that you are better off than people who heard about it first.

The way I got into my dreams when I was 7, came from a nightmare which happened frequently. I reached the point that I knew It was a dream again. When I woke up inside the dream I just wanted to wake up to reality, but everything I did in that time was useless because I never woke up! It was a very long time till I finally got the control inside.
As I learnt most natural LDers started with frequent nightmares with usually the same subject.

Maybe that's why I never had one before, I hardly have nightmares, I can't remember the last time I had one. So I guess I didn't need to escape from nightmares by becoming lucid!

You can't dream about something you don't know exists, that's true. LDing isn't an object you dream about, but a type of dream.
They are naturals because they get them without trying. Some only have Lucids. So from their point of view LDs were the only thing they knew existed. Some time ago, if I remember correctly, a natural posted a question "What are normal dreams like" or something like that. Maby that will clear it up a bit.

Wow, imagine only having lucid dreams! That would be amazing! Has anyone done any studies on natural lucid dreamers to find out what else they might have in common? Such as a higher/lower IQ, more/less creative etc? It would be interesting.

Also, is there any medical disorder or anything that causes people not to dream at all? That would be horrible. Or is dreaming something that every single human being does?

I'm very new here but... how does anyone stumble onto this site without already knowing about lucid dreaming from some experience and searching it out?

What I dont undertand, is how people could just have LD's all the time without trying and without even knowing what it actually is, then you have people that work at it and try for months and months before they even get a smallest dose of Lucidity.

Think about it in a logical manner, if this statement were true then something as lucid dreaming wouldn't had ever existed. If you would had to know that something as lucid dreaming existed then no-one would ever have had lucid dreams. Well, not unless some guy would come to the conclusion that something like that is possible.
In anyway, they just... know which makes me jealous (no offense )

I have LDed since I was a kid..

I remember the most vivid and longest LD was when I was little. I spent over an hour teaching myself to fly. And now.. I have NEVER had 1 LD where I don't fly. as soon as I become lucid I start flying. Like its a habit or if I'm in danger I fly away. I have always had really vivid dreams since I can remember. Always had nightmares as a kid. always had a big active imagination.

I think because on average since I can remember I have had 2-5vivid dreams a night.. everynight. Dreaming becomes very normal.. and being lucid is just an extra thing. I thought everyone had lucids. I thought it was normal until I found this place.

so yeah I think my lucids came about because I dream A LOT anyway. and when in danger or do repetitive stuff I become aware.. it just clicks and in an instant I'm lucid.

I have been writing my dreams down for a while now.. I used to draw them when I was little. I loved what I saw and would draw them so I could come back and remember them.

When you are aware of your dreaming so much and enjoy it so much.. becoming lucid is just a big bonus of the thought time you have put into it.
