      EEG headset

      I found this article interesting:

      http://technology.newscientist.com/a...batteries.html

It is about an EEG headset that uses solar power and body heat to power itself.

I am most interested in the headset itself. It is a lightweight product that looks like headphones.

This is interesting because an EEG can read the electrical activity of the brain. If it works properly, it could be a very precise measurement of sleep, thus knowing exactly what stage of sleep the sleeper is in. I could see this being like a new and improved NovaDreamer.

Current LD equipment relies on sensing eye movements. I am not sure how reliable it is but I would think that EEG equipment would be nearly the most reliable means of determining the state of dreaming.

I really hope Laberge and his team work on something that manipulates this technology.

On a side note: I could also see this being an excellent tool for gaming, as the article suggests.

I've always been interested in brainwaves and the states of consciousness that correspond to them. You're right, this kind of technology could definitely be used in some way to create a new LD device.

Is it documented as to what brainwaves are most commonly present during REM?

I would imagine a mix of theta and perhaps some alpha.

      Yes, it is documented.

You hit it right on the nose =)

It is a mix of theat and alpha from my understanding.

An EEG should be able to detect the pattern, or maybe get triggered when delta waves change back into theta/alpha. This might allow the sleep institute to create a headset that will release sound that could trigger LDs. It has been a while since I read his book, but if I recall, he discussed which sense (sight and sound) delivered the best results. It was probably sight, so creating a device for sound may not be worth it.

Still, the EEG headset would be great for monitoring brain activity while asleep.

Being able to track brainwaves would put you in 'the theta zone' quicker. I would be very interested in a tool that does that. I noticed no price mentioned (probably quite pricey)....
