a strange sensation

Sometimes when I am falling asleep I have this weird feeling like I'm spinning or falling, even though I'm just laying in my bed. It's almost like being on a roller coaster ride. I know that if I open my eyes, the feeling will disappear, and sometimes it goes away before I fall asleep. If I can fall asleep during it, though, it usually leads to lucid dreaming.

So does this happen to anyone else? Does this weird phenomenon have a name? Is it directly related to lucid dreaming? I can't find any information about it anywhere online.

That is called Wake Induced Lucid Dream. WILD for short. You are passing from waking to sleeping while staying consciously aware. You experience those feelings every night before falling asleep, but you usually aren't conscious at that point. You are very lucky to be able to do that naturally! Most people, including myself, practice very hard for it to work. I still haven't succeeded, but I am still trying. There are many people that can do it though.

I've heard it referred to as "sleep paralysis".

I have those sensations too, usually accompanied with alarming sounds and hallucinations.

I have that a lot too. It's not really sleep paralysis, at least not yet. It falls into the hypnagogic hallucinations category. If I'm very tired I start spinning so fast it makes me sick...heh. I haven't succeded to do a WILD though, but I'm very close when it does happen and the spinning isn't the only hallucination. Usually I get lots of images and people screaming into my ear.

I don't think sleep paralysis is a good term for it either, but it seems to be related to that.

When that happens reassure yourself that these are just hallucinations and try to relax yourself through it into lucidity. Tell yourself the next scene that appears will be a dream.

I looked through the tutorials, and last night I tried the technique where you count your breaths... before I even got to 15, I was having those spinning hallucinations. I think I could have gone all the way to lucid dreaming, but I panicked because I thought I was suffocating and woke back up.
So I'm going to try again tonight. Thank you!!

You may have actually stopped breathing! I've heard of this from friends and it happens during sleep paralysis states sometimes.

It can also be a sign of arrhythmia,... best you wake up when that happens!

... best you wake up, or you may find yourself in a lucid dream that you can't return from,... as in the death of the physical body!

... just be aware, and welcome your own concern. Listen to what your body is telling you at all times.

I did actually have sleep apnea as a baby, but I think I'm okay now. I think what was happening was as I got closer to sleep, I wasn't breathing as deeply, and then I wasn't sure if I stopped consciously breathing I would keep breathing unconsciously. Actually, the whole thing was very scary for me. But I shall persevere! (and pay attention to my body, yes.)

You know whats even crazier? try controlling your spins. Try spinning to the left, stop, then spin to the right a little bit, the spin back to the left maybe a quarter or a half rotation.

the craziest feeling i swear.

This has been happening to me....very infrequently and only when I sleep. It affects my dreams and I'm not sure if I am experiencing Vertigo or what is happening. I'm hoping to find someone who can shed some light on this subject.

Have you read up on Meniere's disease? I'm going through some strange symptoms and the key one that clued me in, is the sensation of my entire whole body actually feeling like it's being spun around. Not only spun around but last time it felt as though I was also being pulled off my bed. I'm looking for any insight someone can give me.

I get this too .. I feel myself sinking into my bed and I cant feel my body but I can feel it spinning and I can change the direction I spin too which is strange ! Its a pleasant feeling.. your body feels really light and your head has a buzz to it.

im like sooo glad i read this because i expierence the same exact feeling and its soo intense sometimes i feel as if i have to sit up and open my eyes to get out of it but now ive been reading alot latley i guess i should just fall or relax into this feeling right? please if anyone can help i would greatly apreciate it :D

It's called "Vertigo". It may be brought on by the combination of Photism and the inner ears non vertical position. The greatest danger it presents is that of distraction. Remain focused, remain conscious of your identity, your awareness of existence, and your purpose.

I don't see how this is vertigo, since I induce this sensation when I WILD - and last time I checked vertigo couldn't be induced. This is a tactile sensation when going to sleep, unlike a visual one (HI) most people experience.

I also don't see how it's vertigo, unless he has these sympotms all the time, not just when lying in bed.

I've been Dx with PVD. I have problems with balance because of my inner ear (right). I wasn't sure what was going on, but I felt "drunk" all the time. The feeling where everything is spinning, and severe migraines scared me a little, until I went to a doctor. I had a lot of tests done, until I was finally diagnosed with PVD, which in terms could be called Vertigo.

Lots of things can be called vertigo, an excerpt from Wikipedia reads:

it does not however say that a person can't experience it laying down and it also does not preclude the possibility of other causes besides medical disorder.

Mild Vertigo isn't a problem especially when approaching sleep, in fact it is pretty normal from what I gather.

probably this falls into the category of mild subjective vertigo.

I thought photism was a visual phenomenon. This sounds more like it's tactile equivalent. Is there a word for this kind of synesthesia that is motion specific? Would that term be "Vertigo"?

Before I awake into a lucid dream, I always feel a sort of a tingling
sensation.
Almost a spinning sensation at times, i guess i could say. :)

I get this a lot, but it's usually only for a few seconds. I have yet to turn it into a WILD, but it's good to know that it means I'm close. :) I actually experience this almost every night about 20 or so seconds before I fall asleep. For me, though, it feels like the bed is tilting backwards and I am starting to slide off the top of it head first. Usually after 3 or so seconds it goes away and I feel normal again, though. Is that just because I concentrate on it? Or is it supposed to do that?
