A DILD is a Dream-Induced Lucid Dream. It's when you fall asleep and dream and then become lucid once you realize you're dreaming.
You can say "Am i dreaming?" inside your head; it'll have the same effect. I don't do the breathing, although that's a really good one. My technique is to rub my hands, look at my fingers (to see if i have only 5 and it's a stable number) and then try to poke my finger into my palm (if it goes through, i'm dreaming!). If there's a clock available, i check the time, look away, and check again. If the time's changed, i'm dreaming.
