All dream characters?

Do you believe that all characters in your lucid dreams are parts of your mind or do you believe that dream walkers, angels, dream guides etc....

I have wondered this for ages but last night in one of my lucid dreams i was in this house and this boy was smiling at me and i said your not a dream character are you and he was like no and he seemed real. But that could be that i expected him to say no and act real so therefore he did.

I have got a feeling there are going to be mixed views on this topic.

I often wonder, but I don't know ...

For the most part, I think that they might be a part of my mind, but if Dreaming is more then crazy images the mind makes when you sleep ...

Im sure a lot of people wonder this but it has got to be all in your mind. That could be because i dont believe in god or angels or anything like that though.

Everything you dream is part of your mind. Just like everything you think while you're awake is part of your own mind.

Yeh i find it hard to believe, but alot of people believe they meet angels, dreamguides and so on in lucid dreams, dream characters can be pretty convincing at times as well. I believe that like Oneironaught said it's all apart of your mind and angels and the rest can be created by your sub-conscious to give you guidance, advice etc but they are just dream characters.

The reason that DCs seem convincing is that you are open to the possibilty of them being something else, so they act like they are. It's like trying to do something in a LD while doubting your dream control, you usually fail. The fact that, in our dreams, our mind makes what we believe happen is proof to me that there is no external influence on our dreams (disregarding the effect of external stimuli on our senses, like hearing real music while dreaming).

I'd have to say that most people probably consider their "dream guides" to be simply dream characters, as opposed to being outside beings or entities. That's certainly the way I view DGs.

Of course, Dreamviews' dream guides are really other people... or are they? Hahahahahah *prolonged maniacal laughter*

They're all products of your mind, like the others said. They have varying levels of reality to them, depending on multiple factors (including level of lucidity). I see dream guides as recurring figments with which I can adventure and increase awareness, and not so much as spiritual guides.

I would say that even if it is in your mind maybe that is the DC's life and there life is in your mind so even though physically there not real that might be the life they have, but then again this is just speculation i just like to ponder on the different possibilities im not saying i believe this but we could never know!

I've considered that before, myself. As if the brain is running subroutines allowing for "mini-lives" to be lived.

yes its a neat thought, but the dream world doesn't have a sense of time so these might not even be mini lives they could be someone or somethings life, alas we will never know in this life :-/ , Its nice to know that im not the only one who has had this thought before though!

yeah..i took a DC to finally guide into a lucid....it came as my roomate

I don't know who brought this up so I'll just quote you for now... Although the idea is interesting, I believe it contradicts certain laws of nature. In biology, creatures tend to be as efficiently "designed" as possible. Mother nature (metaphor, not some deity :P) doesn't like waste. When old biological functions grow obsolete, they disappear, when new biological functions are needed, they are created. Every organism, including humans, is optimised for peak efficiency. Now when we think about it, having all these individual consciousnesses living inside our brain would be a huge waste of "brain power". I simply can't believe that something so seemingly useless to the continuity of our species would be allowed by nature.

I think it depends entirely on who you ask and their beliefs regarding the matter. If you're wondering if there's any physical evidance to support the notion that angels/dream walkers/guides partake in our dreams then the answer is no and that's also coming from a standpoint of how the mind works. Now if you're asking do I believe that beings of that nature partake in our dreams to teach/guide/show us things then the answer (from my beliefs) would be a quick, sharp, and resounding YES. Some things our "peanut heads" (technical term btw haha) are just too blind to see or too stubborn to listen to...so we are being molded along the way to better people all the while thinking it's all "just in our heads." I am of the opinion that there is really no way to prove this either way, not in any scientific sense, but that one's intuition says whether or not something is just a part of the mind or if it may stem from the environment. I have had strange dreams while sleeping in inhospitable places involving hostile people that were only a few doors down and I am convinced that parts of their animosity might have been picked up by my sleeping mind. Whether or not they actually entered my dream is doubtful [and also somewhat not that important] but I do believe that the energy was coming from somewhere - though this brings up questions of range and so on.

But couldn't that simply be because you're in (as you said) an "inhospitable place"? You'd expect hostile dreams when you're going to sleep in a place that's uncomfortable to be in or around. The same goes for being around "hostile people". Whenever you're in a stressful place or situation, there's a good chance it will be reflected in your dreams because it's on your mind.

Well tecnicly as they are you they could be "alive" but you have to ask yourself what is life?
are we sombody else's dream characters.
we all know we are god in ld's but to what extent, are these real people.
what i want to know is does or can a dc really feel? i meen pain? emotion if we could find this out then we could actually say for sure that it is or isnt just brain activity.
but even if you invent them whats to say there not real?
i for now atleast believe they are simply images and have no feelings and will do until i have a real reason to think otherwise, if they are somthing else i have a whole lot of dc killing to make up for.
what if they were scientificly proven to be real? would the law on killing them change like "it is illegal to harm immagery whilst dreaming or in the REM stage of sleep" lmao

Personally I believe they're part of your mind, just little creations of the imagination. the eithical implications were they not for a lot of lucid dreamers wouldn't bare thinking about.

That's a really good point. It all seems to lead back to a sort of existentialistic question as to where the limits of the mind are and how much of an effect we have on others [assuming there really are any others]:?

I think it's all about attitude. One's attitude can certainly effect that of others. And, taking that to the next level, your mood/attitude affects your dreams.

There is no way dream characters can be real. Firstly you can control their actions, make them dissapear, appear, explode or whatever you wanted, complete manipulation. Secondly they are completely random, like come up with the craziest stuff, thirdly think how many people kill their dream characters in lucid dreams, think how many would have been killed i don't think there is a number for it. There is also no chronoligical order to their life. I could go on and on with reasons why this isn't possible.

It's not about a second entity living in your brain. It's the question of existence itself. What if they do live a mini life. Look at the universe, full of something we all are. Is that not the deal in a dream? There is your own little virtual universe in your head. Could be the same deal with a computer. What would happen if our universe got some eyes to see into the "nothingness", perhaps "we"/"I" would wake up, hmm?

I have no idea, but sometimes I meet people in my dreams who I feel such a strong connection with. I feel like Ive known them forever. Its really weird but ehh I dunno...

I know what you mean. It's probably apart of your brain/personality which would explain why you feel so close to that person.

I've had the same experience - people so real and yet unknown at the same time. Then later, I meet people who remind me of the DCs and it makes me wonder, though I am sure that I am probably trying to squeeze the real person into the mold of the dream character that they remind me of.

Most of this is kinda of one sided, I'm breaking that.
I believe that minds can connect.. This belief opens up any different theorems like empathy, finishing another's sentence, someone saying an answer to a question the exact way you would have if you were asked first; on a larger scale, dream walkers, dream guides, religious figures, Psionic abilities, Chi excercises, etc. The list can go on and on... But note, whenever a connection is made.. it will never go unnoticed. There is always a sort of feel carried with it. Its unexplainable if you havent felt it, but when you experence an outside source in your mind will know for a guarantee that it was an outside force/person.
Though, thinking on the subject alone records it in the subconcious, in turn, dreams of such can be induced. But in the back of your mind you'll know the difference despite what you tell ppl.
People's belief are too diverse to generalize what is what. If you think on it long enough you'll find your own answer.

Hmmm, thats a different way to look at it..sometimes I do feel they're more than just dc's....

I think that it is important to go with one's intuition - it seems as though we are taught from a young age to distrust the one thing that defines who we are.. I have had dreams as well where events have transpired afterward that were just too... I don't know.... to be coincidence

The study and manipulation of dreams is such an ethereal pursuit as it is, we may as well all embrace the mystery of it

Ive always wanted to except my intuition, but people always end up telling me Im being paronoid....so Im very double-minded...but I still know when somethings more than just what it seems..

I think Dream Characters are part of your mind, but that doesn't mean they're not real. If you think about something, that thought is real. The thought exists, just not outside your head. If you're trying to say that Dream Characters are real people that actually exist in this world and meet you in your dreams... then no I dont think that's true, but if you mean people in that exist in your head then sure, why not. they're dream characters all the same

Im not saying anything by posting this link, but it gives us something else to think about when we ask "Are DCs real?" Read the FULL page before judging it. If you have visited this page before, by all means, post what you think about it.
