Whatever works for you... as long as it helps you stay conscious while falling asleep. Step 1 is pretty much essential, because you're close to a quality REM state, as opposed to WILDing when you first go to bed, because even if you succeed in staying conscious to the first REM state, it's less than 10 minutes and low-quality.
After that, you have to find something that will get you the right balance between staying conscious enough to recognize that you're falling asleep but not too unconscious so you don't lose consciousness when you fall asleep. Try out your method, if it doesn't work, try something else.
