      What State am i in?

I tried to lucid dream for my first time recently, i know i got somewhere because the feeling i got was intense but at the same time i know it wasnt a lucid dream. Anyway il try and explain what happened and hopefuly you guys can tell me what im doing and how i can get to the next step of lucid dreaming.

I started off by getting into a comfortable posistion and relaxed my whole body. Eventually my breathing became slow and my eyes felt heavy; then i got the feeling that there was this really dim white light off in the distance. I sort of allowed the light to get brighter by relaxing and being passive and it sort of felt like the light was engulfing my head at which point i felt this weird sensation, kind of like when you get that shiver down your back but prolonged and more intense; also my breating quickened and i took in very short breaths for about 30 seconds without exhaling. Anyway it eventually slowed down and i felt like i was aware that i was still awake and not dreaming but really really relaxed , to the point where i wasnt paying much attention to my limbs. At this point i think i tried to induce a dream because i tried to think of random memories which made me lose my concentration and i snapped out of it.

      Sound like anything?

Sounds like you were close to a WILD. Those random images and stuff are called hypnogogic imagery, they are the portal between the waking world and the dream world. The feelings that you had were the beginnings of sleep paralysis.
