Hi I've been readind Dream Views for months but only just bothered to sign up.

I understand most things and have had about 5 LD's since visiting this site. (All were DILD's)

Only one or two were extremely lucid and vivid (the rest were low-lucidity and hazey)

But sometimes I hear people on here talking about "dream guides" are they just DC's or are they different? All explanations welcome.

They kind of are DCs but they're smart and they act like a real person would. Some say that dream guides are a representation of your subconscious mind. They are used to help you out. They're like a mentor of lucid dreaming.

Of course, it changes from person to person,
[and I have yet to find mine]
but I've read several different techniques.

Such as, summoning a door, and telling yourself [or saying out loud] that your dream guide will be behind it.
You could also just turn around, telling yourself your dream guide is behind you, much like if summoning a normal DC.

But I've heard that often, nothing will work until the time is right.
So if you're having troubles, don't worry,
you'll find your dream guide when they believe you are ready

I don't mean to shoot the whole theory down..... but I don't believe in dream guides.
Dream characters are a manifestation of our own imagination. So consciously and subconsciously, I believe you are your own dream guide.

One way is by paying close attention. I have read (would give link but I don't remember where) that they look you in the eyes more. They may also try and contact you without saying "Hey, I'm your dream guide!" Such as saying "I know who you are, but they don't"

That's cool the more I think about it. DGs know you are "the dream master" but the normal DCs dont.

Good luck finding yours, I have yet to find mine either.

Exactly, you are your own dream guide. Some parts of our mind fully understand what we are capable of in the dream world. I think of the dream guide character as a character that represents the part of our mind that most fully understands all the possibilities of the dream world, and appears to show the other parts of our mind, closer to the conscious level, what those possibilities are. Nothing new-ageish, just a reminder to ourselves of what we are capable of.

I think I met a dream guide once, in my first LD. I went with three other characters to try jumping to the top of a building. The first character jumped straight to the top and waited patiently for the rest of us, as we all hit lower parts of the building and slid back down to the sidewalk. It was as if one part of my mind knew what was possible, and was just waiting for the rest of my mind to accept what was possible.
The new evolutionary paradigm will give us the human traits of truth, of loyalty, of justice, of freedom. These will be the manifestations of the new evolution. And that is what we would hope to see from this. That would be nice.

Wow, the idea of dreamguides sounds both cool and creepy to me.
I mean, it'd be nice to run into a dc that knows your potential, and can therefore introduce you to it, but on the other hand, it seems like I would feel challenged or uncomfortable if I was to ever encounter a dc with such depth.

So are Dream guides always the opposite sex of the person dreaming?

      Nope.

There is never an "always" - it changes from person to person, like lots of things to do with LDing..

I've even heard about possible animal dream guides, but I'm not so sure about that..

Dam it's hard to imagine a dream guide behind you if you don't know what it will look like.

If you're worried about that, I have two suggestions

      1) Imagining your ideal dream guide, who you want them to look or appear to you

      2) Or simple imagine perhaps a shadow, or a bright light in the basic shape of a human. That way you don't have to give it any specific features or limitations.

      this is all speculation though..

      good luck =D

In my opinion, dream guides as a seperate, distinct entity, are a myth, or at most, a self-manifestation. I guess it's possible to have none, one or many more. And in the case of the former, if you have enough control over a dream, you could always invent one.

My brother has actively reminded me that it is a dream on more than one occassion ("Hey, you know this is a dream? Become lucid.") but I don't believe he is a "dream guide" or any one else is. He's just doing what my brother was meant to do in that dream, you know?

That's not to say I don't want one. But then again, I'd like to meet many fantastical characters in my dream. Perhaps, when I'm a little more experienced, I'd even have an accidently-on-purpose run-in with my worst fear (that'll be a dream to remember).

But do not despair at this opinion if you believe that dreams are more than your sub-conscious! This is a perfectly ok thing to believe, and you might be right. All I'm saying is, there's plentty enough in your mind to surprise you already!

Guided or not, explore your dreams.

      You'll find a lot.

I know I will, ssome day.

What do you suggest to do when you have found your dream guide? I mean what exactly is it good for? Can you ask it for wise advices or something?
Currently practicing WILD. I quote Kaniaz who said it best: "The point of WILD is to piss me off". Though, I have not given up, far from it.

Dream guides are just DCs that you allow to be smarter than other DCs

What I mean by this is simple: When you see a character that you think is your "dreamguide" you allow that character to act outside the bounds of a normal Dream character (for example, if your in a lucid dream walking down the street and a random DC walks up to you, you expect him/her to know nothing about you (like any normal random person on the street wouldn't know anything about you) thus he/she doesn't.

On the other hand, if your walking down the street (in a dream) and think: "holy shit, that DC thats walking up to me is my dreamguide!!!" then your allowing your subconscious to let that DC know everything you know. thus giving it the air of wisdom most people associate with dreamguides.

In conclusion, a dreamguide isn't something special, all it is is a normal dream character that you expect to be smart. (so basically, any random DC you walk up on in a dream could be what people call a "dreamguide")

      hope that made sense

By BillyBob's explanation I can then safely say that every single person I've met in dreams has the potential to be a "dream guide". xD

      ...What, they all know me.
