OK, I have a few questions relating to polyphasic sleep...

1) When taking naps for a polyphasic sleep schedule, how much sleep is required before you go from REM sleep to deeper sleep? Most sources say 40-45 mins. If I were to nap for 36-38 mins for example, would i avoid deep sleep? I'm asking this because i want to take 3x 40 min naps instead of 4x 30 min naps

2) If i DID fall into deep sleep, would i still wake up groggy, even if i was only in it for a minute, or even a few seconds?

3) 'I8aflea' mentioned in another topic that you should use a 3 hour block to cover your deep sleep, and the naps for your REM sleep. I thought the point of polyphasic sleep was that it cut out deep sleep all together?
Is deep sleep neccessary / recommended?
