      Reasons for Dreaming

We've recently been doing about theories for dreaming in Psychology: removing useless information, random neurone firing, fulfilling repressed desires, delayed learning etc etc...

Which theory would best account for lucid dreaming? I would have said Freud (repressed subconscious desires) but it doesn't really fit with the dream being consciously controlled. Or do you think it is an example of humans rising above natural instincts and needs a different explanation?

If there have already been posts on this I apologise. Any links to info on this would be great.

I thinkn theres not much difference between LD's and regular dreams. Just more awareness. Everynight we controll our dreams to some degree. Just as much as we're comfortable with. Usually just your dream body. I think dreams are there to go over all the crap we dont go over during the day...so in essence...I think it works harder at organizing thoghts than we could even attempt to do in the daytime. I think about how much i get through in my head in a day, and its crap. Most of my mental energy goes into tasking and eating and following random strings of thought, inifficiently. I think when i dream...I cover everything. Its like the daily board meeting, where the little guys in my head review everything and go over ideas for how to make this business succees...(me being the business). And if you think about it...the dream matrix is the best and most powerfull tool known to man, to process, do field tests, and work through anything imaginable! Ok....here goes my random strings of thought again! Im sure this will all make more sense to me tomorrow when Ive had some time to actually process(sleep on) it.

What? Nobody discusses the Theories of Carl Jung anymore?

One needs to consider that a Science that depends upon laboratory Quanification of data particulars is ill equipped to evaluate Dreaming, or indeed anything regarding the Complexities of Life. What exactly is Science supposed to do with Qualities, Values and Aesthetics. What numbers can Science assign to feelings and emotions?

Science insists upon the Random Firing and Neuron theory only because the Quantification of Data can envision no other possibility. We might as well have a Bean Counters Report on the Art Work in the Cistene Chapel, and the importance of Michelangelo in Art History reduced to the number of his brush strokes.

Anyway, just in case the Departments of Psychology are now embargoing the contributions of Carl Jung, you should do some Web Searches on the name. His works are very extensive. where they most apply to Dreaming are in regards to his ideas of the Collective Consciousness and the Archetypes. "Aion" made fascinating reading for me way back decades ago when I was in school.

Well, there are chemicals and hormones and things that regulate feelings, and it depends which parts of the brains are being activated by electrical pulses. You can probably tell that I'm not up on the specifics of the whole thing, but it all boils down to biology and physics in the end.

Anyway, thanks for mentioning Carl Jung - I'll look into him.
