When you reach waking consciousness (lucidity) it occurs to your being that your body should become aroused. It will draw focus to your body, leading to you start feeling your body. You have shifted slightly out of the state you need to sustain a true REM vivid dream. It causes the advanced graphics to break down. While slightly out of phase with the dream state you can reduce your focus to some very simple aspect of the graphics. I minimize what I am trying to render to the absolute smallest. Say I am in a room and become lucid. My body tries to wake, but I have sidestepped that (I have ignored my body swiftly and skillfully). Now I am not in phase for true REM and the visuals collapse. I would perhaps stop to tie my shoe. This means I look down and bend down. Now the room is gone and the only visuals needing rendered is a shoe and my hands. I let it go black and white. I calmly examine my shoe while slowly pulling up the laces. I am not seeing the room, only the shoe and hands, and in black and white. I stay occupied however long it takes to be stable. That is, not at all sensing my sleeping body or even thinking about it, and waiting to be fully back in REM.
This is pretty advanced in that it takes practice, but hopefully some of the thoughts help.
