Oh yeah, I definitely hear ya!! It really is a big step - you're starting to become aware of the states in between sleeping and waking.
There's a way you can close off your mouth and nose without doing the classic nose-pinch, just like you hold your breath for going underwater. It's a little tricky though, and not as sure as the normal nose-pinch. You can practice doing that and try to breathe in and out a few times.
I think if I had a tendency to have false awakenings, I might just try lying still long enough to 'record' the dream into your memory by repeating it under your breath, as if your'e telling it to somebody (this brings it through into your conscious mind and imprints it there), and then just do some classic RCs.
Heck, if it turns out you have false awakenings pretty much, I'd forget about lying still and just assume you're dreaming every time you wake up. You need to decide sometimes between 2 options, like do I try not to wake up too much by not moving, or do I go for the lucidity instead?
