You mean pills like Aspirin?
I think they don't have any influence on your dream recall etc, but I'm not sure.
Pills can alter your neurochemistry, but not to a point where you can't experience lucid dreams. They can still have significant effects on lucidity, vividness and control though.
If you direct your friend to the Lucid Aids sub-forum, he will be able to read about several experiences regarding the responsible use of relatively safe drugs that can help improve lucid dreaming. Most of them are actually harmful to your health and sleep quality though, so there's that.
