When I have a lucid dream, I feel like myself the same way I do in the waking world.
I can make decisions, I understand that I am in the dreamworld, and I pretty much function like I do in waking life.
The main difference between waking life and lucid dreaming, to me, is more about the feeling.
Lucid dreams have this unique mysterious atmosphere, and all of a sudden absolutely everything you see feels new and unexplored.
And you are never completely sure what you might find behind doors and around corners, so even opening a door can feel like an exciting adventure. xD
The way I feel when I wake up from a lucid dream is that I almost feel like I fall asleep in the dream, if that makes sense.
I feel that my visuals start fading away, then I slowly start to feel my physical body until I lie in bed again.
It is a very direct transition, it kind of feels like I am warping from the dreamworld directly to my physical body.
I think one way to get a sense of how a dreamworld can feel could actually be to watch old animated cartoons, like the Donald Duck episodes from the 40's and 50's (there are lots of them on YouTube).
The environments in those cartoons can often look pretty realistic, but they still have this enchanting "unreal" feeling to them.
That's more or less what lucid dreams feel like - they look realistic, but the feeling is completely different from waking life, this thrilling feeling that makes you want to go exploring everywhere.
Here is an example of an image from the episode "Drip Dippy Donald" from 1948 - observe it for a moment.
Now, imagine that you could actually step inside that image, and walk around in the rooms.
It would feel pretty different from walking around in waking life, don't you think?
And that's because then you wouldn't be in physical reality any longer, but in a fantasy world - and that's the wonder of lucid dreams:
the realization that you are now in a world where anything is possible, and where our ordinary expectations no longer apply.
