Memory does not work well in dreams

I just thought about something and wanted to type and post it wile it is fresh in my mind. At about 6:30pm my wife said she was going to take a nap and wanted to get up at 8:30pm. After a couple of hours of being on the Internet I remembered and looked at the clock, it was 8:25pm. “Wow “ I thought, “How did I do that” If I could only do that in a dream. Is it really exercising the power of memory or is their something preventing memory as remembering your dreams afterward? Does anyone have any input on this observation?

well... it may be that when we're sleeping, our brain isn't "fully on" so to speak, while in waking hours it usually is. just a thought.

You have a point. We need to turn on the brain!

I'm going to move this to general discussion, since it doesn'r really specifically target attaining lucidity if at all

Anyway, I have to disagree slightly with memories not working that well in dreams. My "dream memories" are pretty good. You see for some odd reason, I revisit my past dreams and explore the setting again. This doesn't happen often, but enough for me to notice. Once i even revisted a dream that i had a year ago. I completely forgot about the dream until i went back there again. I even went "back-in-time" in one of my dreams and saw myself going back in time, not in our real time, but back in time in dreams. I saw my past dreams that i forgot rewind before my eyes

      so..yeah...does anybody experience this?....

      Dear Dreamtamer,

Actually, most people have fairly accurate internalized clocks. People who are chronically late may not suffer so much from not being aware of the precise passage of time, as from being sociopathically full of contempt at the notion that they should not keep other people waiting. Indeed, my cats are aware of the correct time within seconds of real time, waking me up within seconds of my digital alarm going off (my only training of them in this regards is that they be careful not to be any more early than a few seconds -- the new kittens being anxious and eager to jump upon me a few minutes in advance.

Also, it may go beyond simple time. Back in my old college days, and in my workaday life I have only overslept or daydreamed myself into being late for appointments maybe 5 or six times in all, but in each of those situations, my appointments had been cancelled. At some level I knew that I could disregard my schedule, and so overslept or simply worked through the time of my appointment, only afterward becoming aware that I was 'late'.

I Guess I should of just simply said, “do we need to exercise the memory to Attaining Lucidity?” Remembering to become Lucid in a non-lucid dream.

You have a wife? .... anyway, it's just that I pictured you as a teenager this whole time! Dang!

Memory is always worse in dreams than waking life, I believe it's because the state of mind "lucid" is not something we're usually accustomed to, and that mental frame of mind does not make recall memories from our waking life as easy. but I've had experience of recalling waking life memories while inside a dream, it's pretty cool, it's like bridging two more elements with each other.

I always felt I stopped aging at 18 and my body continued to get older. I’ve gained knollage and matured in my mind but for some reason I don’t feel a day over 18 mentally. Maybe I was meant to life at 18 forever. Thanks for the compliment.

Yea, I know people that do that a lot. My memory (internal clock) is not bad in waking life it just seems to almost be non-existent in non-lucid dreams. That is part of how we become lucid in a MILD. So I guess I was looking for some Ideas on how to improve this memory (internal clock) during a Non-lucid dream.

I know what u mean! I usually have to get up at 5 and I set my alarm which is a cd. After a while just the sound of the cd turning in the alarm clock a few seconds before it went off was enough to wake me up. Now I end up waking up a few seconds before that.

Yea that’s when I do have some memory in dreams; in the morning after going back to sleep then I might remember to do a RC.
