I think you are looking at this from the wrong angle.
With MILD, all you need to do is fall asleep, while repeating your mantra. That's all. How do you know, it has no effect in your position, and why do you think, it would have better effect in different position.
If you fall asleep too fast, lets say 2 min, repeat your mantra for 5 min while sitting on bed, then repeat it as falling asleep till you asleep. The sooner you fall asleep, the better. You sleep longer, get a better sleep and have better chance at lucid.
You also repeat your mantra during day. When walking, taking a shower, listening to teacher, sitting, makes no difference. Same way, when you tell yourself "Oh, don't forget to pick up milk on the way home". Your position is irrelevant.
