Shooting someone may just mean, that there could be someone or an idea, that you would like to get rid of. Maybe you feel like someone is putting bad ideas in your friends head, and he is doing it himself and that's what you want to stop. It's not literal.

But I still believe, that asking your friend directly will be the best. Hope you guys solve your problem.
